Default Newbie here. Got a question about becoming a VA

Are there any VA employment that would be good for a person who never did this before? I am a very hard worker and am willing to learn, but want to get started in the right direction. Thanks

Hi Sabby,

Welcome to VA aboard. If you are in US, then yes there are many companies who take VAs as their employees and you can start working for them from comfort of your home. Also, you can work on Freelance sites, where you have lots of freedom than working as an employee.

Here are some of the companies that I have taken from About.com

Here is link to the compiled list of Work at Home Companies

Important Note : Please make a through research before applying for any jobs. There might be scams in these resources too. Please be aware of it.

Thanks!
Jessie

You can also try to look for other VAs who might be sub-contracting work.

Good luck!

Hi. I am a recruitment specialist and team leader for a great company works with virtual assistants. There is just a basic understanding of computers that is needed to get started as you will be trained. I would love to help you get started in becoming a VA. You will be so glad you did. I tell you.

Hi, my 21 yo daughter is interested in possibly becoming a VA but we really don't know too much about it. What skills, experience would be necessary beforehand? What kind of pay could possibly be expected with a year's experience, for example? How does the pay and work envrionment differ than for a medical transcriptionist, for example?

Thanks so much for any help you could offer.....

You say you've never done this before, but what are your other jobs?

Have you ever worked as a secretary at all? There are certain skills that you must have such as:

Administrative Skills
Office Skills
Word/ Office program knowledge
Email Knowledge
Newsletter Knowledge
Wordpress know how (helps)
and more

If you don't have any of these skills you just need to learn them. There are classes that you can take online, and even Virtual Assistants who take on interns and will train you. But you must have a minimum amount of "office" type skills to get started. You must know how to use your computer, and be willing to learn.

There are a few really good sites that you can look at to help you. Try to avoid working with some of the so called VA agencies, they bill themselves incorrectly as far as I'm concerned. If a company tells you exactly how to do something, when to do it, and how much you'll be paid, yet says you're not an employee something is wrong.

Don't pay money for a job, but do pay for training. Don't work for free, unless it's part of training (internship). Be very picky about said internships to make sure that you're getting something out of it for your time and effort. And please don't undervalue yourself and try to compete with Virtual Assistants working in other countries. Charge the going rate for your country and your area.

Find a good mentor to help you navigate and don't give up. Let us know how you're doing and the steps you've taken to get started.
