As far as the second half goes, do you find that the QA work is difficult? As in, do you find it's so bad sometimes that you have to completely retype the whole thing?
The reason I ask is I'm thinking of moving to a model where I pay the transcribers the same, but they're not held to high standards, and then paying editors a higher rate to look through the transcripts.
As I raise my rates in the coming few weeks, I'm looking at changing my entire process. I'm trying to decide whether or not I should pay my transcribers a lot and hold them to high standards, or if I should pay the transcribers the same amount, hold them to lower standards, and pay the editors higher.

I'm not sure why you're choosing to ignore the first part of my post, but I will tell you that I find the QA work relatively easy. You do spot checks on the file compared to the audio and it needs to be about 80% correct or it gets failed and you move on to the next file that needs QA. If it does meet that 80% then you proof the rest of the file correcting any mishears or inaudibles you can catch as well as correcting any punctuation. I find that it goes rather quickly. I agree that if you go that route, you need to have some sort of pass/fail system in place so that you can follow up with the original transcriber.
