Interesting, I didn't realize how drastic the 5 mph difference would be.

as someone mentioned, constant speed is your friend....cruise control is your best friend! Resist the temptation to speed up around semi's if you aren't in a hurry. In fact, I can kind of "draft" behind busses and trucks and my MPG on the dash will go up 10-15MPG higher than what my normal average is!

Don't get too close though, that extra little you might save is NOT worth endangering yourself! Those trucks are big, but they are designed to stop faster than people give them credit for!

Default Good tips....

I always combined my trips by putting a sticky of errands and combine them into the same trip whenever possible....as many of us work from home, that cuts down on ALOT of gas $$ - and I also support using public transportation whenever available to avoid parking fees/gas.

Thanks!

We don't drive nearly as often as we used to anymore. I really plan when we need to go out so that we can get all our errands done in one trip, this saves us from driving up town multiple times a day/week. It really adds up to not make those extra trips!

When I shop at the grocery store, Stop & Shop I get points on each dollar I spend and then 100 points is .10 cents off per gallon. It helps

I really enjoy when a store merges with a local gas company and provides up to 50 cents off gas per gallon if spending at the store is over a certain amount. That really helps when filling up a tank of gas. So helpful!

Great article. Jewel and Shell are also partnered up (at least in Chicago) with the Fuel Rewards offering .05 off per gallon up to 20 gallons I beleive. And Walmart offers a discount if you use their Giftcard, MoneyCard, or Walmart Credit Card. I actually just applied today for the WalMart card. My fiance run's around like there is no tomorrow, back and forth through the city. He fills up 4-5 times a week!

Thumbs up Great Tips!

I really like all of the tips that you posted, especially regarding keeping your car maintained. It always seem easier to "do it another day," but research shows that maintaining your car saves much more money in the long run than otherwise.

I also really enjoy using my cruise button. It also keeps me at a constant speed to help prevent chugging gas.
