Note: This job is unresearched
KidPub Press, a publisher of books written by kids ages 8 to 19, is looking for a part-time production editor interested in working on an hourly contract basis. You will be working on books that are typically 50 to 150 pages long and are written by kids. In this role you will take marked-up Microsoft Word manuscripts and import and lay out a book in Adobe InDesign. We currently use InDesign CS5.5, and you'll need to provide your own copy. The markup scheme is pretty simple, using styles in Word to map to elements in InDesign. For example, a Word 'Title' style would map to an InDesign 'Chapter Title' style. We also use several scripts that help automate some of the work. The expectation is that you will spend no more than two hours or so completing the layout of a book, which includes front matter, book body, and (usually) table of contents. We use a couple of standard formats for our books in terms of typography and design, but as you work in the role we would love to hear your ideas on how we can improve the look of our product. In addition to layout, the production editor will make corrections to books in InDesign, given a list of corrections from the author. Corrections typically are minor, but some authors are very enthusiastic about making changes. The corrections are listed by page and paragraph (e.g. page 12, para 6, change they ran to they raced). It's often the case that a round of corrections requires an updated layout to take care of widows and orphans. The production editor may also make corrections during the layout process (if you see something incorrectly spelled, for example, you'd fix it). In addition, you might be asked to create a Kindle version of a book; we have a standard process for doing this that takes about 20 minutes to complete. KidPub Press is headquartered in North Attleboro, MA but our editors telecommute and work on their own schedule. We use Dropbox to move work products back and forth. There won't be many hours per week to start but if you enjoy the work and can produce the level of quality that we expect, and do it quickly, your role could grow. We'll want you to lay out a sample chapter or two so that we can talk about our production tools and techniques. You can expect 10 to 12 hours per week for the first several weeks. Editors are paid monthly on a 1099 basis. Work schedules are very flexible; manuscripts ready for layout are stored in Dropbox and you simply choose a book to work on. When you are done, you return the completed manuscript to a Dropbox folder. Requirements: Please include your resume when replying to this post; be sure to indicate that you have a copy of InDesign/CS5.5. How To Apply: If you are interested in this opportunity, please visit Part Time Production Editor with InDesign Good Luck!!! Carlene |
