I'd love to hear anyone's experiences of tutoring with TutorABC (ESL). Also, do you know of other ESL online tutoring sites?

I just started with TutorABC this week. So far, so good. They have their own lesson plans - It's pretty easy work. I've been teaching ESL for a couple of years now, so this is a nice way to earn some extra pocket money.
There's a ton of online ESL companies. To name a few: Alancity, Idapted, Kaibell, GoFluent... |

Thanks for the information on the other companies. I wonder if the pay for Kaibell is any higher than TutorABC? I've been tutoring with TutorABC for a little while.

The teaching is fun, the students are predominantly Asian, and are super friendly. With TutorABC you can determine your own teaching schedule. They are flexible with you taking leave as well.

This, I must say, is quite an interesting company. Just had my interview last night. All seemed to have gone well. The interviewer was extremely nice!
The only thing I got to get now is a webcam without a microphone. The microphone needs to be part of the headset, I was told, for better acoustics. Guess that makes sense. I’ve ordered a Dynex set from Best Buy for $29.99 this morning. Hope it’s worth the “investment”. I’d keep you guys posted when I start my first class tomorrow. Very excited as I don’t quite know what to expect. |

I just picked up the cheapest headset and webcam I could find, and they've worked fine so far! How did your first session go?

Hey, Jennifer. This is my 3rd month now and apart from the occasional students not showing up for class (in which case you’d either be redirected to take another class or if nothing happens, sit through 45 minutes of web surfing and coffee sipping and get paid for it!)
I must admit it feels a bit guilty to be paid for not doing any work, but that’s how the system works and who am I to argue with that? The work itself is easy since the teaching material is prepared for you as you know. A tip is to make sure all the students understand, some of them are quite shy. I always try to correct them as much as possible. - As far as the hourly rate is concerned I was quoted a rate and they stuck to it. It was mutual and I respect the transparency and honesty from an internet company thousands of miles away. Couldn’t ask for more if you ask me, really! |

So my headphones arrived late and I had to borrow one from my brother to commit to my first class.
Fortunately, it was in working order and things got off to a good start. I had only 2 students in my class. One was an interior designer and the other one worked at the bank or something. The teaching material uploaded by itself and I know now what I didn't know...that is, I could preview the material 15 minutes ahead of time! That would've been a huge help! Anyway, I tried my best as I navigated through the slides. Although it was a beginner level class, the students understood quite well I thought. 45 minutes went by and I managed to finish everything and cracked a few not so funny jokes. (I hope they got them though!) So all in all, I got to say that this was not the nerve-wrecking experience I thought it'd be. I am not hooked yet, but I think this could be the beginning of a beautiful friendship..ha! By the way, I got pretty good feedback ratings from both of them. (Hope they're not just being nice!) |

does anyone know how i can increase my upload speed for TutorABC? i tested at 487kps and they want 512 to work for them:-(

I think I can answer that one.
Your upload speed is actually fine. Bear in mind that these speeds change every second (much like your blood pressure!) and no two seconds are ever the same. The speed you tested at is more than adequate. To tell you the truth, that's better than mine most of the time...and I don't have a problem with my connection when I'm teaching. Hope this helps
