Can anyone tell me how exactly how a mystery shopper works and how I can become one in my town or area (I live near Reno)? Thanks!

Actually, I believe it is illegal to mystery shop in Nevada. I know we have to hire a private investigator for anything we need mystery shopped in that state.

Mystery shopping is not illegal in Nevada, but you must either be a licensed private investigator, or the employee of one. There are lots of mystery shopping companies with shoppers in NV.
