I have noticed a good amount of work during the day but in the evenings (after 6 pm or so) there hasn't been any. Is this common or just because it is a slow period?

It all depends on the workflow. For me, being Pacific time I usually find work from about 4 a.m.- noon and then again after 9 or 10 p.m. But that changes too (usually just to that there is no work haha).

I'm having trouble finding some during the day, not just at night. What's up with these people? I thought this was there busy season.

A lot more people seem to have been hired lately and the typing gets taken up really quick. I have only been able to get a few pennies in the last few days. I have been doing MTurk instead because it has been hard to make money here lately.
