Hello all,

I just wanted to know if you have to sign up with your ss#? Do you get a tax form at the end of the year? TIA

Yes you have to give your social security number and they send a 1099 at the end of the year.

They send a 1099 at the end of each year, if you've made $600 or more for that year.

Default wondering...

So I haven't figured out all the tax ins and outs that go with working from home, say you don't make $600 dollars and they don't send you a 1099. What do you do when you go to file taxes at the end of the year if you are employed by them? I guess that question can blanket any company really,

If you didn't make $600 with any co. you work for from home, then they don't send you a 1099 form. So, therefore you are not required to report those earnings. This is one reason why the IRS doesn't like independent contractor status, because someone could technically earn tax free money, if they worked for enough companies as an IC and made less than $600 with each. They wouldn't have to report the income for any of those, if they made below $600. Companies are not required to report the earnings to the federal gov't for ICs who make less than $600.

So, if you didn't receive a 1099 form from the company, you didn't make enough to qualify for receiving one. Hope that makes sense.

Well, TAX DAY is tomorrow. For once I don't have to worry, because I filed really early this year. Normally if I owe, I wait until the last second. Thankfully for the last couple of years, I was owed money and didn't have to file last minute. Because if I owe, I'm in no hurry to pay Uncle Sam back. LOL.

ETA- You are not considered an employee of these companies. Your status is that of an IC or independent contractor. This is why you are responsible for paying taxes for work done for these companies of $600 or more, because they don't deduct the taxes for you. If you were an employee of the company, then they would have to deduct taxes for you and you would receive a W-2 form, instead of a 1099 form. 1099 forms are for reporting miscellaneous income, which is what unemployment benefits and independent contractor earnings are considered. And I'm sure there is other types of earnings that fall under miscellaneous (like child support payments).
