Maybe someone here can give me advice on what to do. About two weeks ago, I decided to apply for food stamps as I've been out of work for months. I only receive a small income from Social Security because I took it earlier than I wanted to. I also do Textbroker and KeyForCash as a ways to make a little extra income in the meantime, until I find work. Hopefully soon.
At Family Services on the application I did mention that I do these two jobs as an independent worker for extra cash. The case worker told me she needs a letter stating that I work for them. That's it, just a letter telling them I do work for them, period. If I do not get these letters, I cannot get food stamps. That's what she told me. I emailed Textbroker on Feb. 7 and KeyForCash, explaining the situation, telling them both I ONLY need a letter stating I work for them and it has nothing to do with Taxes or Tax records. Christina from Textbroker immediately sent a letter stating I do article writing for them and how much I've made since October, 2009, which is minimal. Christina did it the same day without hesitation. KeyForCash is another story....and I've only made under $300.00 for the year there, but, they're being very unresponsive about this and I'm getting very upset. I received an email back from KeyForCash within 2 days and this is what they said: "If your earnings in a calendar year are $600 or more, we will mail you a 1099-MISC form the following January. The amount of taxes owed depends on your circumstances. Because we are not licensed tax professionals, we cannot provide tax advice. If you have questions, we suggest you consult a tax professional." I had already explained to them I do not need anything that deals with the taxes and I do not need a 1099-MISC form,........just a small email stating I worked for them when work is available. I responded to this last email 4 times since then and they will not email me back. If I don't get this letter, I'm out of food stamps and they won't give them to me. I've been trying to get hold of someone since the 7th of February, and NOTHING, just nothing. I even have a case number with KeyForCash, so someone MUST be receiving the emails. Any suggestions? The only thing I can think of is to copy all the emails and show them to Family Services, telling them they won't respond. I cannot believe KeyForCash is being so uncooperative in this manner, it's just a simple letter I'm asking for. Would you keep working for this company after this? After all these years, I'm ready to quit. Thanks for any suggestions...............I hope everyone is doing well! |

What I would suggest is to yes, copy the email you sent to and receive back from KFC. That in a way is at least some proof that you work for them. Bring that correspondence along with the stubs that you get from KFC. The paystubs will show that you have been earning money with them. Just let Family Services know that you work for them as an independent contractor and are not considered an employee. Tell them you didn't receive a 1099 form, because you didn't make enough money to get sent one. I would think the email you sent requesting a letter from KFC and the response email should be enough to give them. Just tell them that you can't get an official letter from KFC and ask them could they accept the paystubs and email in lieu of one. I pray this works out for you.

This is a tough one Kashmere. Here is what I would do if I were in your shoes.
I would give Family Services copies of all correspondence from KFC and let them know that they are not being cooperative in providing a statement that I contract through them. If FS states that the information provided isn't sufficient, I would tell them I will no longer contract through them. The amount of time, effort and money that I make through KFC is up and down and I can never be sure if I will make enough to get by month to month. At least with food stamps I am guaranteed a specific amount each month that I can depend on. You just have to weigh the pros and cons and do what is best for you and your family. Sorry you are having to go through such a hard time and having to make such a hard decision. I hope everything works out for you. |

You guys Rock! I love you all, I swear, haha!
Yes, I will copy and take all the correspondence with me, and I did copy and paste my account wages for the year, which also show my address, so that should suffice I would think. I don't recall having any type of pay stubs from KFC but I will check my files. For some reason I keep thinking I only received a check and the rest was blank, so it was thrown out. Does everyone receive pay stubs? Great, now I think I'm really losing my mind.....I'm usually much more careful than that but I tell ya, it's been a long year for me. Thank you EVERYONE for your help.....I knew I could count on you all for support. I hope this works with Family Services..............I think they just want to know I'm doing some kind of work. At my age, they don't expect too much anymore, and they know getting a job at this age (will be 63 next month) is not easy anymore. Heck, it's not easy for anyone anymore at any age, and I really feel sorry for the people who have families to support. That's got to be just horrid for them. At my house it's only me and my kitty, Kashmere, but I need to feed her too, right?, haha. Thank you, Thank you, Thank you everyone...........and I will go and check to see if I have any type of pay stubs. XXX's to all of you!!....Bobbie |

I pray all works out for you. Yes, there is what I call a stub that is attached to your check. It has your name in all caps in the upper left hand corner of the document and in the upper right hand is listed the check #, the date and the check amount. At the bottom left hand corner it reads Reference: 12345 (this # will be a different no. for everyone). It looks to me as if this may be a contractor # that they use to identify their independent workers. I notice this number is the same on all these stubs that I get. Once you rip off the perforated tabs that hold in your check, if you look inside of that sort of envelope, you will find this info on the top page that can be kept for your records. I have all of mine from the time I started with KFC last year. This is a good record to keep and use in case you need to show proof of income. So, you may want to start saving these for your records from here on out. I hope you are able to get the support you need from Family Services.
