Default Tax question

Anyone ever got their taxes done online?

Or is it better to sit down with a tax professional and do it?

I've filed online before using programs like TurboTax. But sitting down with a tax professional who really knew what he was doing saved me a lot of money.

I did income taxes for over 15 years for an accounting firm. Whether you need a professional or not depends on what's involved. If you simply have W-2 income and perhaps some interest, it's a waste of money to go to an accountant.

There are many very easy-to-use online programs that are free. They walk you through the whole process step by step. My daughter uses one of the free online services and files a return that includes W-2 income and (2) small businesses (Sch C's) and she didn't even need to ask her mom any questions .

Even with a small business, a program like Turbo Tax is very easy - I've used it for a few years now. The cost is a fraction of what you'll pay an accountant and their call center is very helpful, too. They'll also be there for you, if there's ever an audit.

You could always try entering it online and, if you find you're in over your head, just delete it and go have someone else prepare it...
