Reading all the posts on here i just want to say that any family who choosw to homeschool for whatever reason.... you are a group of very strong focused loving individuals. My daughter has extreme anxiety and i was ata point where homeshooling was my next option. we ended up moving and the new school was actually all she needed!! I would love to spend the one on one time with my children making sure they learn everything i would hope for them but since the move my kiddos are so excited to go to school every day and i encourage them to be social and open up.
Some people look at homeschooling like they look at being a stay at home mom. no one really appreciates it and understands it untill they try it!

My three older children all went to public school. They were all grown and living out on their own when I started homeschooling my youngest son and they were all my biggest critics. I think I might have won them over now that they have seen how well we are doing. He takes karate and we bowl on a youth/adult bowling league together. There is a school teacher at the bowling alley that quizzes and questions both of us about homeschooling and what he's learning and it just goes on and on. I feel like I'm on trial every time I talk to her. I just try to be polite and answer what ever she throws at me as thoroughly as I can.

If you feel like she's quizzing you, why not say politely, "you know, we really enjoy seeing you and talking to you, but I honestly feel like you're checking up on me when you ask us so many questions about homeschooling - I'm sure you're just interested in what we're doing, but we came here to take a break from school and have a little fun. Do you mind if we talk about something else?"
I doubt she'll do it again.

"at the elementary school closest to us, only 30% of the 3rd grade student tested at grade level for reading. Not good. There is no way I would send my kid there."
If I remember correctly, only 32% of children in the US overall read at grade level. The numbers are lower for math and science. |

I have to say it....we've done schooling in probably all ways possible. We had our daughter in private school, then homeschool, then public school. In private school, my daughter was bullied and did not do well. We pulled her and began homeschooling and we were able to straighten out alot of her issues. When she hit seventh grade (just recently) she decided she was ready to try school again so we enrolled her in public.
For the teacher who sees things lacking in homeschool kids....my daughter is in high school now gets straight A's, and doesn't get into trouble. She may be lacking in a few "skills" but she's alot better off then most of the kids in her school. I think some teachers look for things to pick on about homeschool kids and we can certainly find more to complain about in the public school system. |

If someone doesn't agree with something, they will look for whatever negatives they can find and ignore any positives. I wonder too how many homeschool kids the average teacher actually has in their classrooms. You can't judge hundreds of thousands of kids by what you see in a few.

Public Schools are not very safe anymore in my opinion. My 10 yr old nephew got pushed down the slide by another kid and the teacher didn't do anything, My other nephew's teacher took his chair away and made him stand through class because he annoyed her with something he did. Kids bring guns and knives to school. But public school has good resources for special needs children. So there are pros and cons to each type of schooling.

I ignore the naysayers in all parts of my life, homeschooling included. I think that for this reason, people don't even bother trying to argue with me. I simply change the subject. It's no one else's business how we have chosen to educate our children, so if someone has a problem with it and chooses to express it, they don't have an audience with me.
If I had always tried to appease everyone else, I wouldn't even be working from home, LOL. Do what works for you, period. I'll politely answer questions asked out of curiosity, but if someone becomes snarky or if they're annoying me by asking about too many things, then we talk about something else.
