It's just as easy for someone with bad intentions (phishers, spammers, posers) to put an ad there as it for someone to post a legitimate job offer. I would be very wary about sharing personal information in a first response to a craiglist ad. You have no idea who is on the other end of that address.

And, in this case, if the craigslist add sounds intriguing, why not just call WFL directly? If they are indeed recruiting independent contractors to work as raters for any company, shouldn't they share that with anyone who inquires about it?

Connecting prospective employees to jobs--isn't that what a recruiter and/or temp agency does?
I originally applied through the craigslist ad for Google Quality Raters; I got the auto-response that Google had received my resume, so it was indeed legit. I applied again later via the listing on the Google careers site, but it was indeed legit. I've applied for and gotten several legitimate jobs from Craigslist in the past.

I emailed the ad several times with no response. I called WFL but they would neither confirm nor deny that this was actually them.Edited by: ldawg317

I got the auto-response that Google had received my resume, so it was indeed legit.

They could easily have harvested your personal details and then forwarded your message to the legit address from the jobs section of the Google site.

I've applied for and gotten several legitimate jobs from Craigslist in the past.

I'm not suggesting all craigslist job postings are scam-related in some way, but many of them, a large percentage, are exactly that.

I called WFL but they would neither confirm nor deny that this was actually them.

I think that's flat-out bizarre.Beyond bizarre, even.

If WFL has been retained to recruit prospective independent contractors for any client company, what reason would they have to hide that fact?

I've never responded to a Craigslist ad. If you don't want to provide too much info do you just block out your address on the resume or use a different email or what do you guys usually do? Or do you send a "feeler" email out first and then send a resume after you get a response?

I've worked as an independent contractor for several companies who would not disclose the client until I was well into the process. I was told that it was due to a contractual obligation. Perhaps that is the same situation that WFL is in?

I think it would be highly bizarre and time consuming for them to send my resume to google for me - and the auto response would have gone to THEIR e-mail in that case, not mine. I got the auto response within minutes, as I have every other time I've applied for a position with Google. I'm quite satisfied that it was a legitimate WFL posting in that instance.

I also called WFL to verify this listing. I was told that they only handle payroll processing at their corporate office, and that the hiring is done by recruiters who don't work from the office. That's a plausible explanation. The woman I spoke with said that she had no idea what recruiters were working that particular project but said that it sounded like "the Google project" to her.

Either way, it looks like the rating project isn't going to be as nice a gig in the future as it was in the past...that makes me sad.

Kittenish...not if they had forwarded using the e-mail address you applied from...the auto response would still have gone to you. If you're comfortable, fair enough. I would be wary, but that's just me.

I still think if this is actually WFL recruiting for Google it's unusual that they would involve a third-party site when the jobs section of Google's own website would seem to be available as in the past. Maybe not so unusual given what I consider an excessive veil of secrecy and melodrama in regard to all of these rater positions, regardless of whom is doing the hiring and for what company. I guess they must think it necessary, but I just don't get the logic behind it.

Anyway, back to the craigslist postings? Has anyone received a response...the auto-reply, more information, anything?

This part this a strong clue that the company behind this is not Google:
