I have a question for any billers out there. What software do you use? I was using Medisoft version 7 back in 2002. I stopped my business then. Now I am starting it up again and need software because I found out my version 7 stinks. It is so outdated. It will not even send Eclaims without trying to use a modem. I am soo frustrated because Medisoft wants too much for there basic. I use to just pay an upgrade fee. Any ideas??? Please???Help??

Hello....I rec'd my certificate for medical billing and claims last year and I have not started working with it yet and would need to refresh on the information a bit. But I see you said in your post that you had a business of your own and wanting to start it back up. I'm not sure if I can help you with your question with the software, but I had purchased the medisoft version 12 last year as well. I have to toddlers and I want to stay home and work with the billing. Do you have any suggestions on how to go about starting up my own or finding an employer who will give my a chance to get my foot in the door and still work from home?

I have worked in medical billing in Florida for othopaedic surgeons for 20 years but since I moved back to New York 15 years ago I worked in finance.
I loved medical billing and would love to start an at home business since now I am retired but, do have to supplement my social security. I would love any information you can send me regarding medical billing at home and also I was doing coding while working for the doctors.
Loved it!
Any info would be greatly appreciated.

I had my own business last year(still have it but no active clients at this moment) and found a client and made about $13,000 but it was only for 3 months so I need to find another client. I searched craigslist and careerbuilder daily under keywords like billing, independent contract, practice manager, outsource, payment posting, flexible hours, charge entry, willing to negotiate, things like that. I also had the medisoft 10 but the client I found, I was able to use their software remotely. I found the client first, then went called to get a tax id and after that I registered the name with the state and told them I had to open up a bank account. I opened up a bank account then got a registered state name. I told them I had a remote staff. It was 3 of us. I went up there twice a week to pick up charges and payments and entered them in the system at night, while I also had a full time job. This was very tiresome but I could've kept recruiting and growing if I had the guts to quit my job. I am going to try again.

When I interviewed with them, I treated the interview like a regular job. So I was comfortable talking to them. I told them I didn't have a large company but had people willing to work 24 hours if necessary and they work from home to cut costs, etc.

I made my brochures and business cards on powerpoint and went to kinkos and made copies. I also had a website that wasn't completed but I used the domain in my email to sound more professional. I have over 15 years experience and I did independent billing before for 2 other doctors on the side. Everytime I go to the doctors or anywhere I ask if anyone needs billing and I would do it for a fee. If you see an ad in the paper for a biller, desperate help etc. Email the boss and see if they are willing to outsource. Hearing the word NO doesn't mean anything to me. I just kept asking, that's how I found the client last year. In the past when I was working in the hospital a doctor asked me some questions on how to get claims paid and I said I'll do it if you pay me cash. So he just let me clean up his A/R for 3 months and I got an extra $2000-$3,000. I said I would do it for a percentage.

If I get another client, hopefully it's a long contract and I can quit my job and focus on it. I still work in an office doing medical billing but want to get enough to cover benefits, etc and taxes that I have to pay out on it.
