I've seen reports for several years that people have gotten jobs from it and that people have hired folks using it. I think that like a lot of other "hookup" sites, you have to be pretty specific when you are contracting with someone.

I don't know if there's a lot of MLMs there, and I don't know how hard they check for scams and frauds. But it's legit.

I have personally gotten clients off of Elance.

I really like Elance but you need to be really patient & put in at least 2-3 proposals per day.
It may take a week to a month before someone responds back to you.

If you have any questions feel free to ask, good luck!

I'm an elance fan. It's where my freelancing business took off. However, it can be time intensive to make the site work. You have to weed through lots of jobs from folks who want to pay pennies for the moon and the stars, and you have to compete against other freelancers who are willing to work for practically nothing. That said, there are some good buyers on the site who are willing to pay good money. Spend some time honing your profile and bid proposals to focus on what you can deliver to the client. Then, as tburton said, you need to bid, bid, bid!

I've used Elance in the past. I secured a pretty large grant-writing job on there once. The hardest thing that I have found is that you are competing with a large number of people for each contract, and many of them are willing to work for only a couple of dollars an hour. For me, that kind of pay is just not worth it. Take the time to make your profile exceptional and you will have a better shot at jobs.
