Question you have to ask yourself is, what would you do if you were looking for another job? Would you quit it before starting a new one? Saying goes, dont quit your job till you get a new one. Once you have your business up and running and seeing it's gonna actually be successful, THEN quit your job. With today's economy, privately owned businesses are kinda shaky during these times. They are either successful or a dud. In my town, any new private owned business starts off ok but quickly goes down the drain and about 6 months later they are putting the out of business sign up. Being I do not know what your business is going to be, kinda hard to say. You don't want to quit your job, start your business and have it go down south and then be left with nothing. So please do yourself a HUGE favor and for your family, and stay with your old job till you know your business isn't going to close anytime soon.

Default Quit your job!

There is never a 'right time' to leave your job. People make plans to start their own business, and then say 'when it's the right time to leave my job I will'. But then life happens, and money gets tight and they never do it.

You have to get out whilst you have the motivation. Find something part time so that you can do both (if you must), but you should trust enough in your new business and your ability to make it work that you can do it. Remember - you are leaving one thing for another thing that has a vested interest in making money!

Believe in yourself enough to put it all on the line. It'll be worth it.

Default In this economy...

Sincerely, I would keep my job.

I was in similar shoes...and regretted leaving...picking up a "supplemental job" in this market is nearly impossible.

I would keep my job with my flexible hours and build my business to a point where I am

1) debt free
2) have at least 1 year of my JOB salary set aside in savings

Congratulations on your baby and launching your dream!

Definitely GO FOR IT but my vote is do it with wisdom...no need to throw all caution to the wind not knowing what will fly.

In such situation I always prefer listening to my brain and not to my mind. It helps a lot to overcome our decisions taken emotionally.

If you are confident that your business will start earning $$ right away then you can take that risk. If you are not sure, then I would recommend keeping the job while working to roll out the business. See how it fares in the market and then accordingly reanalyze your situation.

Here's an analogy that I gave somebody recently.

Transitioning from JOB to Entrepreneur is like digging yourself out of a hole.

At first you're buried deep (that's the job).

With each success, sale/signup/ or whatever, that's an inch or two out of the hole. And eventually, if you stay at it, you will be free!

Sadly, most people never make it more than half way out of the hole, because they really don't "want" it, or they are being supported by a spouse or family member and don't really need it. :0(

My advice, don't quit your job until you are completely out of the hole.

If you quit your job too early, you might find yourself in even worse shape.

Tim Ferriss, author of The 4-Day Workweek, suggests thinking about the worst case scenario: what would you do if you quit your job, then needed to reverse the situation? How much time and stress and money would it take to get a new job in a new field making the same money, or to go back to the same company and ask for your old job back? I guess it depends on what your job is... some positions/careers are easier to return to than others.

I personally am of the "jump in with two feet" mindset, BUT I have the luxury of being able to do that! My husband supports our family, for the most part, and I don't need to make very much money as far as bills go; my business income is extra.

Quitting also gives you the motivation you need to keep your head above water. If I were working a full-time (or even a part-time) job and making the money I needed to, what would be my incentive to stop talking about starting my own business and actually DO it? If you have to, you'll make it
work, with marketing and advertising and working your butt off.

Life is short. My advice would be to make a solid three-month plan to get out of your current job. Give yourself a tight deadline. I bet you can do it.
