Question SEO Reference

Several of you mentioned SEO. I'm currently trying to optimize my website, but I'm having a hard time finding a good book or reference for what works best regarding SEO. There is so much garbage to wade through on the internet. I'm willing to pay some money for a course or book, but I don't want to throw it away on something that wasn't written by a professional. Any suggestions?

I do a combination of forum posting, social networking, free classified add post, and link exchanges. I am starting to focus a little bit more on my offline advertising now. It cost money to get the materials printed, but I find it more effective for me. Flyers, post-cards, and business cards seem to be what is working for me at the moment.
