In the long term the best way to get free, one way links is to have unique content that people will link to naturally.

To start off though, of course you have to get links on your own to get the site ranked in the search engines. I would agree with some of the other posters that having a variety of types of links is best - some link exchanges, niche directories, articles, guest posts on other blogs, blog carnivals, book marks, forum links, etc. Just start out with some less competitive terms and those kinds of links are all you really need to get ranked and to start getting traffic. If you write articles I think it helps to write guest articles for other sites in your niche and not just the articles directories.

I know of some sites that rank very well in Gogle for competitive terms with almost nothing but article directory links and sites that have picked up those articles. I think having just one kind of link like that is a bit risky, though, because if Google decides to deprecate article directory links like they did with SEO directory links awhile back then the sites with only those kinds of links would be out of luck.

Going through your competitors' back links usually will turn up some good places to get links, too.

Thumbs up start writing articles

Remember, you don’t have to spend a dime to get people to your website. While pay per click may seem like a ‘quick fix’ for getting traffic, most people are terribly disappointed by the results they get from it and end up burning through their budget quickly. Fair enough some may come out the other end with a lot revenue generated however what percent of that is actual profit? Something they might NOT want to disclose

1. Provide regularly updated, unique, quality. useful content on your sites
2. Make sure you understand the key SEO techniques (onsite and offsite) - there's loads of free information on this on the net.
3. Get backlinks from other quality, relevant sites - again, loads of free information on this on the net.
4. Understand keywords and use them correctly on your site and in your backlinks
5. Remember that Google (and the other search engines) rank web PAGES not web SITES so pick which pages are important on your site and concentrate efforts on those first.

Don't be fooled by the 'quick-fix' solutions for ranking your sites. Used properly, the above will get you on page one of Google and will help you stay there.

Default FREE TRAFFIC is the best place to start

After spending lot's of $$ on ppc I'm finding that patience and proper SEO is paying off but it does take time.
The areas i focus on are article writing-- Google seems to like Enzine best. This is a good piece on internet marketing.

Bookmarking- content on your site and if it shows up on other sites. For mass bookmarks check out onlywire.com.

Default Try Traffic Exchanges

Promoting 3 websites at once is a heavy task, but in traffic exchanges you can do that, just load all 3 sites into the rotator and every time your ad shows, it will be one of the 3 sites coming up. This works best if you join a few different exchanges, then use Google Chrome to open all at the same time, Now just click on one site after another to get your ads shown.
