Heather, are you passing your s/h charges on to your customer. I figured that if i charge 10% of the retail as shipping, I re-coup the s/h costs for the product.

Lady E-
Regardless of whether you obtain your own tax number, you must still
pay in the taxes to the state. Allowing the company to do it simply saves
you a lot of paperwork. You are charged the sales tax on the retail price
of the product, and then the company pays that in on your behalf. You
are supposed to then charge your customer sales tax on the retail price,
to "pay yourself back". Otherwise, if the company doesn't take out the
taxes, you are responsible and liable to collect, record, and send those
taxes in with the appropriate form each quarter.
As far as shipping costs- blame the USPS for that.. LOL! Freight shipping
is EXPENSIVE. The nice thing about using UPS to ensure that all packages
are covered for loss/damage. Again, you can charge your customers the
shipping to recover that loss if you wish. Remember, with a business,
there is overhead. Fortunately, we have terrific products and a nice profit
margin (most direct sales companies only offer 20-30% and we are
earning 50% or more profit!) You are also able to deduct those shipping
charges come tax time- so don't forget to keep those records!

So, what is it exactly that I have to keep? Just my invoice I get in my orders?
See, the reason Im not making my customers pay for shipping is because I am going to be selling them in the store I work at! =) (which I am VERy excited!) =)
I guess I just dont want ot end up losing money or not even making $1 after all the work, you know?
I wish that USPS was a non profit organization. LOL

Hang on to your invoices, and also keep a record of your shipping
expenses- at the end of the year staple the invoices and your totals
together
and put them in your tax receipt envelope. You can claim shipping
expenses as a business tax deduction. smileys/smiley2.gif
Even with tax and shipping, profit of jars at MSRP is still $7-$8 per jar,
depending on tax in your county. That's GREAT!
You're in the right place with the right company at the right time!

Well, I just figured out. They charged me with 12% shipping. That doesnt seem right. Do they charge tax with shipping amount too? If so, that just doesnt really make sense. Do we have to pay tax on shipping everywhere else? I dont really pay attenttion when I ship things. LOL

Yep- I think there are 2 states in the US that don't charge tax on S&H...
Can't remember which.. But everywhere else, shipping is taxed.
