I am currently trying the sah thing. I have been working outside the home for 8 years. Now that I have 3 children I have decided that I need to be home. My only problem is that I need something, WELL HERE IT IS.....CANDLES.
My problem is this, will they sell?? I live in a small town and I am worried about being about to have a business of this sort. Any ideas?

Candles will always sell....they are the number 1 consumable item. They can be given for any occasion ..Birthday, Anniversary, Get Well, etc...They also make an EXCELLENT house warming gift. You could approach realitors, apartment complexes, welcome wagons, etc.
Are you looking to make them yourself or buying them to resell? Are you looking to do home parties or market them in shops?
I think realistically they can sell because of the popularity of the product but it just depends on how you want to market yourself and your product.

I am making them. I would love to have parties, but first I need to make sure they are something that will sell. Do I need a business license? What about my name, how do I check to see if it's being used?

Since you are making them, you may want to start off with an open house or try a craft fair in your area. Open houses are a great way to launch your products, and craft fairs are a great way to reach out to people you would not normally meet. Once I get my business fully launched, I am planning on getting into our major craft fest here. It may take a year or so to get in, but the number of people that comes through the fest is ALOT. If you have a decent turn out, then you can go from there. Just don't stop due to one bad showing...it takes time to build a business.
In PA, I need a business liscense because I was using a Fictitious name. If your business name includes your last name, then no, but if it does not then yes you will need a DBA. Also you need a tax id number in order to purchase supplies tax free and to report any sales from within your state.
I checked the internet for mine and the PA business website. You can do a search and see what comes up.
I wish you the best......and remember to NOT give up just because of one or two failed attempts because you will have some....it will just make you stronger : )

If your business name includes your last name, then no, but if it does not then yes you will need a DBA.
Check with your particular state for how it works though. In
Florida, a person's first and last name needs to be in the business
name. If it's just a last name here, you need a fictitious name license.
So the rules appear to vary from state to state. There should be
something online for your particular state on how to start a small
business. Good luck with it!

Hi- and welcome to Wahm!!! I was worried at first too, but candles have turned out to be an awesome seller! I mean- everyone likes candles!! I`m in a rural area- and it`s an inexpensive pleasure for some, an addiction for others. (Like me!! lol!!!)
Good luck to you- and welcome to the "best smelling house" club!!

AngelWings...That is what 1am in the morning while multi tasking gets you.....I did not even notice what I did until you pointed it out...LOL

As for the fictitious name, I was referring to what I had to do for the state I live in which is PA. Anyone know matter where you live, you should always check your state laws because each state is completely different. I did alot of research on taxes and stuff for each state just a short while ago, and they are ALL very different from on another. I can only tell you what I had to do to meet PA laws and regulations.
KYmommy.....I got your PM and I will respond tonight after my kiddos go to bed : )
Thanks
