I have just setup a new blog and guestbook on my web site, has anyone got any advice on how I could make them better..

Maybe to make the blog a little more unique, create a new header for it. Just a thought.

Is this a Wordpress blog? There are some really neat templates out there for Wordpress. I have a couple blogs myself that I've been able to really 'dress up' nicely. :)
I think you are off to a great start! I would love to see some photos of your work. If I were shopping for an artist, I would want to see examples. :)

Yes it is a wordpress blog, it is just an add on to the main website that can be found at www.hulse-painting.com (http://www.hulse-painting.com)
In the main website you can see samples of my decorating, you have given me a good idea though to photograph my work (with thepermission of the house owners) to put in the blog.

Oh, I see now. :) The first thing to pop into my mind when viewing your main site compared to the blog is that they don't have matching backgrounds. Maybe you could put the striped background on your blog? Also, I don't mean to be difficult ( ;) ), but maybe the headers on the two sites could match a little more. I've learned that consistency is important in web design.
In your blog, maybe you could add a page that talks about your process when working. Kind of like a "How I work" page.

The blog looks great. The guestbook would look better with a header and footer file.
