Mary Kay should state somewhere in their catalog that they do not
test on animals. That is a fact that they should be proud
of and advertise .

But do they use animal product or by-products?

Go for it Michele. Ask them!! I'll be anxious to see a
response to that question. I have a lot of Mary Kay users trying
my Re9 set. And they love it!!

Way back when there used to be lanolin in some of their products but
not sure of the current line. I think they have removed it because of
allergic reactions. They've changed and updated their products a
lot. Actually, in their marketing materials, they do say that
they don't test on animals and in the skin care class presentation. They
also use the type of plastic bottle that is recycleable (as does
Arbonne) and they are one of the first companies to use the refillable
compacts to cut down on waste.

If you want to know about animal by products, call the Mary Kay
corporate headquarters customer service line (1-800-Mary Kay). They
would be happy to tell you their ingredients, they have a medical
relations dept. to deal with special needs of customers.

At one of my sponser's parties, one of the guests asked the speaker if MK had mineral oil in it and being the good speaker she was, she said she didn't know and that she wasn't there to bad mouth other products anyway. The hostess jumped up and said she'd be right back. She had been using MK night cream before her party and she brought it back into the presentation and ready mineral oil as the first ingredient of the night cream. YUCK!

Oh yes. Imet a woman who was with MK for 25 yrs whocalled corporate and they told her (she did on her own) that they would send a letter and they did. It listed them all. She showed other Arbonne team members why she switched when she joined Arbonne. We did not use it to show people but she did show her Arbonne sisters.

I had a MK lady recently compliement my business ethics when she approached me that she had been in the business for 23 yrs and refused to leave MK but was very much interested in vitamins, weight loss, and hormone balance. I never pushed her boundries but it was very hard to conversate because she did not understand and I did not want to tell her that as long as she kept using animal by products in personal products she would feel bad, and with minerial oil her skin it could not breathe and prolief would not work because of the protective barrier and it is transdermal. So I just passed on the information and left it at that.

I am hoping to get her to come to one of my home parties or open house and just let her see the information and play if she wants too. I really want to help her but it is so hard not to cross the line on ethics here.

She told me that she knows there is something in all skin care lines that can make people feel bad. She admited she only bathed every few days to prevent dailly saturating the skin. I just looked at her and wispered, my daughter had a growth removed before I was with Arbonne and the doctor said it was not cancerous but was probally caused by something in the skin care and hygiene products she used. I was scared! I then whispered even softer that that is why I refuse to use certain things on my skin that have certain things in them. She said, well I have had my biz for 23 yrs and have 200 regular customers and would never change.

It is hard. BUT she will have to find it on her own.

Ann :)

Whew, that's a long list of companies who are doing the right thing! Mary Kay has not tested on animals for quite a long time, which is good. I believe that there is only one product with petrolatum- contrary to what
someone posted. That is the extra emollient night cream that is in the satin hands product. Regarding the mineral oil, that Ann mentioned, there are many schools of thought on that. I'm not trying to start a war, just want to defend a little, because Ann said Not everyone thinks that mineral oil is a bad thing, and while I don't intend on trying to change your mind, I also don't think there should be misinformation out there. This is an excerpt from an article about mineral oil from:
Mark Lees, PHD
Mineral oil and petrolatum
These are two of the most erroneously blamed ingredients. The truth: Mineral oil and petrolatum, in their pure form, are two of the safest, least reactive ingredients in the world! Mineral oil is the base of baby oil. What could be more sensitive than babies’ skin? Mineral oil has such a notorious reputation but it’s notoriety is the result of erroneous information. The reason it is not used in skin care products very often is not because of safety issues, but because of much bad and wrong information among both estheticians and clients.
Appropriate use: Mineral oil and petrolatum are excellent, non-reactive, hypoallergenic emollients for very dry or sensitive skin. They are generally too oily for use alone, but can be mixed into a cream or lotion. They are often used in prescription ointments because of their non-reactivity and ability to resist bacterial contamination.
When they go bad: Mineral oil and petrolatum is not appropriate when used on very oily or acne-prone skin that doesn’t need any more emollient. Too much mineral or petrolatum oil in a product can be occlusive. Mineral oil does not clog pores as often reputed. In fact, in one study, it has been shown to actually decrease inflammation in acne patients! What happens most often is products that contain these ingredients are simply too oily feeling for clients.(End of quote)

Just wanted to put that out there for you guys, like I said, there are many different views on it- just wanted to give a different one. I know we all love our products, and they work for all of us, but not all of us can use other products with other ingredients in it. For instance, I'm highly allergic to aloe vera, even though it is in many products labeled as "natural."
I have always thought it is important to always talk about the great part of my products without denigrating anyone else's. Peace :)

Valerie,

I am an A****** consultant who has been doing research on my own as well and came across that article as well as many others. Like you mentioned, the mineral oil is a highly debated topic and both sides have supposed doctors backing them so noone knows what to believe!

I personally do not push the mineral oil issue at all when talking about A******. And it is for that reason, I dont want to come off all preachy about the horrors of mineral oil and have that person do their own research(as I would expect anyone to do) and find that that what I said may not be true.

Unfortunately in any network marketing business, what we are told by our uplines may not always be the truth. All we can do is be truthful ourselves, and thats why I have chosen not to raise the mineral oil issue. Unfortunately, my upline and many members of my sidelines just thrive on the mineral oil issue. To each his own I guess.

I appreciate you posting this becuase it is something that I have concerns about as well....so many people using the mineral oil issue as a scare tactic. I thought I remember hearing somewhere that A****** actually doesnt encourage us to dwell on that since it is such a debated issue...I may be wrong though.

Arbonne's stance is that mineral oil is NOT harmful to you or bad for you in any way. However, Arbonne doesnotbelieve that it is the BEST choice and that is why Arbonne does not use mineral oil in their products.

In the product knowledge sheets from arbonne.com (http://www.arbonnemarketing.com/PDF/FOD/MineralOil.pdf (http://www.arbonnemarketing.com/PDF/FOD/MineralOil.pdf))

What it is

Mineral Oil is a mixture of refined liquid hydrocarbons derived from petroleum. It is colorless, transparent, odorless and tasteless. It is an occlusive oil, which means when used in skin care formulations it creates a protective barrier or set on the surface. In poorly refined, high concentrations mineral oil may become comedigenic, meaning it can clog pores.

Why it's NOT included in Arbonne products

The answer lies in understanding of the skin's function. As one of the body's largest organs, its job is to protect the body against: injury, heat and light radiation, the penetration of chemical agents and the invasion of microbes and microorganisms. The skin also acts as a temperature regulator, enabling the body to adapt to different ambient temperatures and atmospheric conditions by regulating moisture loss.

Staying consistent with the Arbonne product philosophy of pure, safe and beneficial, we choose not to use mineral oil because we believe it is not beneficial for daily skin care use. We believe its occlusive properties may be disruptive to the normal skin functions as outlined above. We also believe that because it is occlusive, it is disruptive to advanced delivery systems in which the objective is to send beneficial ingredients to target sites and keep it there so it can provide maximum benefit while avoiding reactions.

Also, depending on the level of refinement, mineral oil can also be defined as comedogenic, which means it can clog pores and induce acne lesions or comedones.

Instead of mineral oil, we choose to use natural oils that have moisturizing and conditioning properties such as jojoba, almond and wheat germ that do not have extreme occlusive properties, and are not known comedogenic ingredients.

Like I mentioned, 2 different schools of thought. My sources say that mineral oil is not occlusive unless in higher concentrated form than what we use in our MK products. (I'm also allergic to jojoba oil, as a lot of people are, but the mineral oil doesn't bother me )
Brenda, I think you have the right approach-

To me the difference is in the way my skin feels now from the way it used to feel using mineral oil based products. Regardless of whether it's considered occlusive or not, my skin is far more moisturized now than before. The lotions I use now get absorbed into my skin and moisturize instead of sitting on top of my skin and looking shiny.smileys/smiley4.gif

Its very interesting what A****** says regarding mineral oil and the transition from that to what many consultants are saying. All you seem to hear is "Do you know what you are putting on your skin?" "OMG your makeup uses mineral oil, thats awful!" etc etc. Noone could actually state a reason as to WHY A****** doesnt use mineral oil.
