Oh my gosh, this is so sad! I hope we can raise lots of money for the family.

Matthew has been diagnosed with CHARGE syndrome.
The word 'charge' is an acronym for the symptoms associated with it. I'll give general first and then talk about Matthew's specific problems. Children who have CHARGE may have a few or all of the below characteristics in any degree of severity:
C - colobomas (separations of any given part of the eye)
H - heart defects
A - atresia (blockages in the nasal passageways)
R - retardation of growth and cognitive development
G - genitalia malformations and hormonal issues
E - ear malformations
For Matthew's heart condition there were to be 3 surgeries, the first already having been done and the next to occur at around 4-6 months of age. Matthew's family has decided not to pursue the next surgical procedure he would need to repair his heart. What has become extremely important to them is Matthew's comfort and quality of the life that he has and they feel that he shouldn't be subjected to any more surgeries at this point. They want to enjoy having him with us until God calls him home. They don't know when that will be, but they do know that they want to cherish this time that they do have.
Matthew has moved to the step-down unit of the pediatric cardiac unit and he will remain there until he is able to be discharged from the hospital either to come home or enter into some sort of hospice care - whichever he would need for comfort.
The Matthew Kullgren Fund candle is scented in Angel Wings and comes in a 8 oz jar. For each candle sold White Lily Candles will donate $6.00 to the Matthew Kullgren Fund to help aid in the medical bills and future expense that may come along.

Sometimes it is so hard to fathom the pain others must live with. My heart goes out to this family. I do hope that our efforts help ease their financial burden so that they can focus on their little angel.
