I've gotten into the habit of leaving scent samples whenever I walk into a gift shop. I've gotten some interest and I haven't given up on the owners!

Last weekend, hubby and I were in a small town not far from our city. It's a known "artisan" town with a few galleries and gift shops.

We wandered around in one shop and noticed they carried the "Y" candles. After talking to the owner for a few moments, I took out my scent sample and asked it I could leave a sample of my "soy-based candles" with her.

She backed away immediately and said NO NO NO - I'm allergic to soy! Please get that away from me or I won't be able to breathe!

I really didn't know what to say so I apologized and quickly tucked the sample away. I told her I'd never heard of a soy allergy and explained I noticed the other candles she carried and she got kind of nasty saying she's discontinuing them as they "have outpriced themselves". I thanked her for her time and left. They can't all be positive experiences. smileys/smiley2.gif

Anyways, it's the "soy allergy" I'm wondering about. Is there such a thing or was that her way of getting rid of me?? smileys/smiley19.gif

smileys/smiley3.gif I have not heard of a soy allergy like that! I have heard of people who cannot eat things that have soy in them, but being around things with soy??? I have no idea. That seemed really strange.

I have come across that several times. People who can't eat soy assume they can't burn soy based candles. I would love to find out if that is true or not. I would think ingesting and smelling would not have the same effects.

Maybe it's the same as the peanut allergy smileys/smiley5.gif The schools here have banned anything with peanuts in it. We have 1 child that if he even smells it, it can have a fatal effect on him.

That could be the case. However I have never heard of a soy allergy that severe. smileys/smiley29.gif
