Hey ladies. I have been researching starting my own candlemaking (slash lotion/shampoo etc) company on and off *more off then on lol for awhile. I know you have to register as a business, get tax id, etc. but what about insurance...do you have to get some incase your product burns someone, or they're allergic? or is a simple warning gonna "cover your butt" so to speak. I live in NJ if anyone else does.

any info would be great! thanks :) Coley

I read what people responded with on the business folder - and your response about talking to the small biz. dev. cntr. I think that is a very good idea and I think others had great ideas, too. I think the warning labels (which are a MUST) only protect you to an extent. I recently registered as a Limited Liability Company - the next step, I am going to look into insurance. Someone somewhere on here said she only pays $27 a month for insurance. It never hurts to have it.

Good Luck!

Hi Sherri! I am going to register a limited liability company as well. I was thinking about sole proprietership, but my brother made a good point that an llc will protect you as a person, if you get sued, they can sue the company and not you as a person.

Well, I'm also venturing in the skin care business. I found a few wholesalers that sell bases of lotions, creams, scrubs, etc. and you add your own fragrances, color, etc. I have actually contacted the FDA to check about rules and regs, and am waiting for a response.

I have my NJ Skin Care Specialist license, so this is something I am interested in.

Wholely, I would like to incorporate basket making, candle making, skincare and soap making etc. into one business.

Good luck 2 u too!
