Not sure it where to ask this.....

I'm looking at making some financial changes in 2012 and bills are top on my list to look over. Hopefully, 2012 will be up with income and down with outcome!

I currently have Time Warner Cable (very basic selection) and road runner. My total bill comes to $73.59 monthly but there are a few tv channels I don't get that my family would like to watch (like syfy).

Wondering if anyone has a satellite provider they like (or don't like) and would be willing to tell me what you pay (total with fees) and for what services. Plus how you get your internet services.

Thanks so much,

Patsy

Hello: I did the same thing a few months ago - switched providers on some stuff to save money. With cable tv, it was over $100 a month just for cable. We switched to Dish for $65 a month and have more channels than we had with cable plus HD. The cost of our DVR is about $4 cheaper as well.
I have phone and internet with the cable company still. The Dish did offer internet but the speeds were much, much slower and the price was about the same.
I worked in the customer service department for a cable company and I can tell you that if you call and tell them you want to switch providers, many times they will offer you a really good deal.
IMHO - the only reason to choose your tv provider is the cost and what channels are offered at that cost. There is no difference between NBC on cable, Dish or Direct.
However, with internet there can be huge differences in the service that is provided. Some internet providers are starting to limit how much time you can be online (your usage). Also, the higher Mbps on your download the faster you will be able to view webpages and watch videos on YouTube, Netflix, etc. The upload speed makes the most difference when you using VOIP services or uploading to your own webpage but also plays a big part in playing games and stuff where the info is saved - such as those on FaceBook.
Finally, I would like to advise you to check out Netflix and Hulu as well. We always have plenty to choose from on Netflix and it's only $8 a month - we watch through the internet or on Xbox. We don't do the dvds by mail. If you plan to do Netflix or Hulu on an xbox, you will also need an xbox live account.
I hope this helps! Have a wonderful day and good luck to you.

Broke down and called Time Warner Cable and told them I was looking for options to lower my bills in 2012. Right off the bat they lowered my internet by $25 to the current special. For now that helps :) In fact, was told I was get the $25 credit on the next bill for this month already paid. According to the rep I will be billed $50.73 (and this includes the little fees and extras) for internet and broadcast cable (first 25 channels).

When the bill goes back up I will re-evaluate my options.... again!

I have Brighthouse and pay $155 for the bundle - home phone, Internet and Cable. Showtime is my only extra channel.

That said, I've had cable and I've had satellite in the past, personally I prefer cable. I seem to have less problems. My parents also switched from cable to satellite and now they complain all the time LOL

I am with Dish and I don't like the hidden fees. Our bill started at $60 and now we are paying $80. My internet is from a cable company it was $34 starting out but will be about $60 starting next month.

I used to have cable but Comcast here sucks... service always goin out, service men never show up, etc.. and I was paying $124+ a month! just for tv

now i'm with dishnetwork and I only pay $39 for 200 channels and dvr with 2 tvs hooked up so they can each watch whatever they want
no hidden fees, etc. and service only goes out when we've got tropical storms

best change I made!
never again to comcast

For TV, I just use a digital TV box with an antenna from radio shack. After set up, it's free TV and has enough channels to keep the household happy. Redbox is around $1 per night and Blockbuster or Netflex have cheap subscriptions, whenever we want to watch movies. Also, I can watch TV for free on Hulu or YouTube. I have neither cable nor satellite for multiple reasons, economically, philosophically and morally. Time Warner Cable does get my $ for Internet, though.
