I personally feel if you are going to pay for advertising you need to keep a couple things in mind.
1. You need to run the same ad 4-6 times in the same publication to really get a good result. People have to see it a couple times on average before they will call.
2. I persoanlly don't do regular newspapers I think that picking a focused publication is a better investment. I also feel that publications that are free get a very good response. Placemat advertising, local kid's directories, and an animal lovers newspaper have been a good source for me. I would suggest looking for a focused publication that goes well with your business.
On that note I do think that print advertising works when done right and in a focused publication consistently, but just putting and ad in a publication because they give you a good rate is not worth it. In that circumstance I would say spend more money on getting postcards and doing a direct mail campaign ect

YES! I use my local It's Classified paper. That is all that is in it. It is FREE and goes to many many towns in two states!
It cost me $68 to run my ad for 13 weeks. This paper comes out 1 time a week on Thursdays.
I have gotten numerous bookings and a few recruits from this. My ad is SIMPLE but effective! Remember LESS is more when advertising. It says
Romantic Toy Parties!!!
Ladies........ these parties are all the RAGE. From Mild to Wild 100% Confidential! Call to book yours today.

I get many leads. I just had a $1,000 party from it on Friday night!

ITA with focused advertising & have been considering it. I would NEVER place an ad in our local newspaper, but I would in the local holistic living magazine.
I've also advertised in any free place I can find - craigslist, etc. It can't hurt if it's free. I can't say I get any business from those, but if it's free, I'll keep doing it.

I have tried SEVERAL avenues of advertising my Noah's Ark Animal
Workshop. As far as the newspaper, when I sent a press release,
that got a few calls. When I actually placed ads, I got calls
from senior citizens and one crazy woman. I am not saying
anything bad about senior citizens, but they really aren't the market
I'm after usually. Like was mentioned above, if you can find a
area advertising magazine that would be your best move depending on
your product/service. Honestly, I only advertise locally because
there isn't much bookings from bookings with Noah's Ark because it is
birthdays and special events. If I were doing a traditional party
plan, I would just go with word of mouth--and perhaps set up at a local
fair to get new leads.

Newpaper ads do work! Keep in mine that you need to be consistent with it. As Amber mentioned, people need to see it a few times.
Weekly papers work better than daily papers. People tend to skim over the headlines on daily papers and throw them away, but tend to hang onto a paper that only comes out weekly.
Another thought when it comes to advertising in the newspaper are the inserts that are in the middle of the paper. My making a flyer type of ad in a catchy color works well. People may throw away the rest of the paper, but keep the flyer insert.

If you are in a small enough market so that your paper isn't outrageous
in price (like mine is) I say DO IT!!! Those classified
papers are a great choice - but remeber that your recruits may not be
as gung-ho as if you got them at a party - just my experience!
