View Full Version : Thinking about joining. I have a few questions.

I've been lurking for awhile and I have been seriously considering joining Avon for a few reasons. The number one reason is that it's been around for over 100 years.
Also, I'm in a rut. I saw some of the other ladies talk about how they worked online but needed a change. That's me. I want to challenge myself to be around people again. I feel like a hermit.
I have a few questions:
1. What are the requirements to become a leader? Is it choice or are there any special requirements?
2. Does the back office have examples of flyers/posters and other marketing materials? I am not very creative.
I can't think of any other questions right now. LOL I had a few more, but have forgotten them.
Thanks!

I've been lurking for awhile and I have been seriously considering joining Avon for a few reasons. The number one reason is that it's been around for over 100 years. Actually its 125 this year :)
Also, I'm in a rut. I saw some of the other ladies talk about how they worked online but needed a change. That's me. I want to challenge myself to be around people again. I feel like a hermit. I was a hermit and extremely shy when I started. It has changed me for the better.
My JOB was as a safety manager and back up Pharmacy Technician... it was like every day was a 12 hr shift.... and as a tech... you dont talk to people as you are working in a sterile field. Getting used to talking to people was one of my first challenges.
I have a few questions:
1. What are the requirements to become a leader? Is it choice or are there any special requirements? You are not required to form a team of your own, you can just do sales. But Leadership is the second way we generate income with our business. Unit Leader is the first titled position. You need $200 in personal sales, 5 first generation orders and all orders under you plus your $200 must equal $1,200
2. Does the back office have examples of flyers/posters and other marketing materials? I am not very creative. I am and highly recommend using vistaprint.com Its extremely user friendly and if you look I have posted a few of my creations here to share with everyone. Yes they do have flyers though
I can't think of any other questions right now.
I am usually around and happy to help you with your questions. Most of the ladies here will help without an issue. I do this full-time and absolutly love how it has allowed me not only to quit my fulltime job, but to be able to help my daughter with caring for my two young grandsons. My avon business made that a reality!
LOL I had a few more, but have forgotten them.

I see Bonnie has answered your questions. I just wanted to add that you may be suprised to find a lot of us Avon lady's were shy to begin with. Of course if you knew us now it would be a shock. Avon is one of the best opportunities to help you feel more confident in yourself. When I joined Avon I didn't even talk on the phone. I was very shy. Now I will pretty much talk to anyone.
Another reason I love Avon is because it gets me out of my house. If not for Avon the only time I would get out is when I pick the kids up for school or when there is an activity with the kids. With Avon I get out, talk to people (make friends), and earn money. I can't say I have any complaints about joining Avon.

I'll chime in here as a new rep. I am also a hermit, more by circumstances, not really by choice. LOL I am beyond thrilled to be back with Avon! I sold in the dinosaur days when everything was done on paper, no computers. The Avon opportunity is just about the greatest thing out there. I am looking forward to being able to join the land of the living again! And Bonnie is the BEST UL out there! You couldn't ask for a better person to sign under! Looking forward to welcoming you!

If you have been lurking awhile then you have read many of our stories. I started the last week of august and havent looked back..I am currently at 4 people under me, heading out this afternoon with my DM to prospect and signing a new rep tommorrow evening. I am so close to UL I can taste it! I am not shy, having spent the better part of the past 15yrs in marketing in some form or another. I am however a hermit by choice, so for me avon pulls me out of that I want to stay in my pjs all day and enjoy my couch mentality and into the dude this is going to happen if it kills me mode.
What I love about avon is that there are no recruiting requirements, no quotas,no inventory,no parties,no bs. You work the biz however it works for you not for anyone else..you can set your goals and be happy where you are or move up and on as you like. Nobody is going to call you complaining about your sales or you recruiting saying you need more.
Its a great company!

I was just like you before I started with Avon. We'd moved and I didn't know anyone. I became a SAHM and spent 16+ hours a day working online. After 10 months of this I was tired and needed a change. I couldn't have been approached about Avon at a better time. That was almost 5 years ago.
I was really shy. I went to deliver brochures on doors I felt like everyone would be staring out the window at me. I realized one day after receiving business info on my door knob and I didn't hear them sitting 10 ft away that no one really pays attention. Now I have no problem just knocking on the door.
One way to help is when you're out, just start saying hello to people as you pass by. Try to find something to strike up a conversation about. Doesn't have to be Avon related. It's just to help you get use to making conversation with strangers. If you can work your business in that's great!
After a while it gets easier. Just gotta keep going and keep pushing yourself.
If you get into leadership (which I definitely recommend) having someone to work with will also help build your confidence.

Kudos Dawn (and I love your b/w pix)
Dawn is so very right. Shy people can and do thrive in this business.
Its just a matter of finding out something that fits how you feel and your own personal comfort level. Amusing Newby story for you:
When I first started out (now be nice and dont laugh too much at me)
I was painfully shy - My DSM just kept "on" me about power of 3... talk to 3 people you dont know every day and get them a book.
1. I could usually do looking down at my shoes and muttering
2. By #2 my heart would be racing and trying to beat out of my chest... by this point I would shove a book into their hand and almost run away.
3. Now Im almost in tears, heart pounding and feeling sick.
This just was not working for me.
So I found another way to do Power of 3
(My DSM cracked up when she heard this)
I would go to the local grocery store - grab my shopping cart and accidentally on purpose "bump" into someone elses cart, just so I could apologize.... and open a conversation. Bump into 3 carts, hand out 3 books, exchange biz cards and back home again. Hey, it worked for me until I got the confidence to just talk. I have no idea why it was easier for me to open a conversation with an apology, but hey, it worked for me
Another one that took me by surprise
I was sitting outside at a local Starbucks enjoying a warm beautiful morning and had brought a stack of my books to label. So the stack is sitting on the table.... people asked me if they could have one! First time that happened I must have looked funny... mouth hanging open in shock!
When you get your confidence up and realize people WANT our brochure handing them out becomes SO much easier!
We all start "somewhere". It doesnt matter what you do as long as you do "something!"

What great stories Bonnie! Thanks so much for sharing them. I am not sure that I can 'talk to strangers' at this point. Not sure if it's 'shyness' or 'fear'. Probably both. I love the Starbucks story. I could see myself doing that one easily!

Hi Avon Ladies,
Thinking of signing up, just waiting on hubby (to find out if we are transfering or not).
Questions:
What would be your recommendations on getting started? Order a kit or not, and if so which one??
How many catalogs would you recommend for a newbie, to start out with? Do you order more or less catalogs, during different seasons?
Does anyone just sell say jewelry or candles, or is it best to do it all?? I have Avon jewelry from way back and it still looks good.
What type of guarantee does Avon offer it's customers??
How much does the start-up kits run, if I want to sign people up under me? I know it says contact a representative to sign up.
Can't think of anymore questions right now.:)
I know, without a doubt, that I can sell Avon. I can and do talk to just about anyone anywhere. My outlook is: A stranger is just a friend I haven't met yet!!:D
I know a smile goes a long, long way!!:)

PM coming your way
Questions:
What would be your recommendations on getting started? Order a kit or not, and if so which one?? You can join online easily, the Avon kit will be mailed to you. As an Avon rep you can also sell Mark and also Tiny Tillia (baby line). Its all included in the one startup cost.
How many catalogs would you recommend for a newbie, to start out with? The book is your store... normally I suggest 60 to 100 on your first order - your kit will come with 10 for the current campaign and 10 for the second campaign. we order them two campaigns ahead.
Do you order more or less catalogs, during different seasons?
This is our busiest selling time of year as the holidays are approaching, this is when I purchase the most books of the year.
Does anyone just sell say jewelry or candles, or is it best to do it all?? Our brochures have something for everyone, so selling all will give you a better profit and stronger customer base.
I have Avon jewelry from way back and it still looks good. Yep!
What type of guarantee does Avon offer it's customers?? 100% satisfaction guaranteed
How much does the start-up kits run, if I want to sign people up under me?
A face to face appointment is $10 - an online appointment is $20 for you to join
For you to buy the kits to sign up reps of your own, the kits are $10 but you get that back from your recruit when they join.
I know it says contact a representative to sign up.
Yes there are many of us here who would be happy to help you
Can't think of anymore questions right now.:)

Lol, you put a "thumbs down" symbol on your post.
If you're transferring somewhere northeast, I would love to have you on my team and guide you to success. Otherwise, I know of a few great ladies here that can help you.
You can purchase the $10 starter kit and that gets you the free website too!

Sorry, we'll be in Arkansas, somewhere.
Actually, found out last night, we won't be
moving to where we thought we might be going.
That however, does not mean we won't move somewhere
else. We never know. Hubby is a federal protective officer
and we go where the company he works for needs him
the most. Been doing this for 3+ years. We live in an rv,
so moving isn't that big of a deal. At least we don't have to
pack up everything to move, just move the breakables.

You know you can sign up with anyone and when you move simply change your address under your profile on youravon.com. The tricky (sometime annoying) part of this is if you want to change districts to your current district you have to get the approval from both District managers. But signing up and changing addresses is easy.
