I have completed a website for a woman I used to work for and now I'm trying to get it submitted to the search engines and make sure that it'sranked well.

Does anyone have any tips for getting it in the search engines and getting it ranked at least on the first page other than paying for it?

Thanks,

Amanda

first of all: if it is not already in there, add your site to google, msn, yahoo, and dmoz.
then:

#1) Content is KING!
The best thing you can do to help your search engine rankings is have fresh, original content, and lots of it!

#2) Get people to link to you!
Links to your site from popular, relavent sites will push your ranking way up. Any links to your site will help, but the more popular and the more relevant the site that links to you, the better.
A note on link trades: It's still debatable, but most Search engine experts agree that trading links negates the effect of the link. The best link is a one way link to you, with no link back to the other site.

Those are just the top 2 things you can do to push up your rankings. There is a million other things that will help, but if you hit those 2 and do them well, you should rank in the top!
