I am looking into career step for MT. I was wondering, after you graduate, how much you make and how long would it take to make $20.00 or more. And is it possible to start MT at home after graduating? Thanks!!!

As a certified medical transcriptionist you should be able to earn at least $10-$15 per working hour to start off with. You typically get paid by line, though, so your work efficiency is a large factor in your effective pay.

I have been transcribing for 15 years and have worked both at home and in a hospital. Before the particulars, a word of caution about going into it. It is a dying career. With the electronic medical records and voice recognition, they either don't need you or need less of you. I have gone back to school after losing two jobs in 3 years from hospitals going to electronic records.
If you are set on going into it, as an entry level with no previous experience working from a national company at home, you are looking at anywhere between 7 cents a line at the lowest up to possibly 8.5 cents, depending on benefits or not. There are only a few national companies that higher newbies. Without being specific, I do make more than that but not much more. You won't normally find any company paying over 10 cents a line. It really then depends on how fast you type and how accurate you are as to how much you make.
If though someone asked me today if they should go into it, I would recommend coding over transcription.

meganbushfl, I'm sorry you've lost jobs recently, that's terrible.
I've been doing MT for 15 years too, and I've never lost a job...but I welcomed the switch to speech editing and am still working 40 hours a week editing (with regular overtime) and loving every minute of it.
I much prefer speech editing to straight transcribing as it's much easier. The pay comes out the same for me.
I do hope you find steady work. I hear coding has a limited future, however.
