View Full Version : Internet Options for Rural WAH

What internet options are available for work at home people who live in rural areas that can't get DSL or cable internet? I used to use a wireless data card for work until the signal got to the point that it was useless. No other cell phone company has wireless broadband coverage for my area. There's no wi-fi, and satellite internet, which I had before for a brief time, isn't even in my budget at this time. Dial up is terribly slow.
I work the evening shift, and I don't have a car at this time. Even if I did, there aren't places with free wifi that I could go to to work until my shift was over, and gas is high. I just don't make that much to do all that. Any suggestions would be great.

Well, when I lived in a rural area I used HughesNet. They are a little pricey but provided high speed by satellite. You could start with a company that doesn't require the highspeed, not sure what you are looking into doing, but there are options :)

Some places don't allow satellite internet. The trouble with those is the lag time for the signal to go up to the satellite and then back down to earth.
If you can't get any cellular broadband or fixed point wireless out there you are probably out of luck. Might look for something that doesn't require broadband internet access.

HughesNet is going to require a small satellite dish, so if you can't get Internet cable, there is a good chance the HughesNet will not work because its pretty much the same thing... but just internet instead of cable.
More than likely you will need to get a wireless "modem" that will connect to your computer by a USB port... some people call this "cellular internet". Check out Cricket Communications and you can learn more about it.
Also, another option can be to double check that there is no provider available in your area. You can check it out by using Whitefence (Connect and Save on Your Utilities at WhiteFence | Home Phone | Cable TV | High-Speed Internet | Electricity (http://www.whitefence.com)). Its like a bundle telecommunication provider. You will have to input your address and it will find services in your area.
If all else fails, not sure what you can do but to possibly do but most fast food biz have free wifi.. such as Mickey D's.

I dont think ALX requires a high speed connection, at least that is what I read on another post.

It's true that some places don't allow satellite internet. You can always ask the prospective employer what types of Internet connections they allow/disallow. I know it's more challenging when you can't get high speed service like Roadrunner because of your location.

Another satellite option would be Wild Blue:
WildBlue: High Speed Satellite Internet Provider: Official Website (http://www.wildblue.com/)

Hi Fushia_Brown,
I live in rural area too and I use an air card and get (not-so-great) wireless service. There's a new type of service being offered called Mobile Broadband Internet. It works really well for folks in rural areas and picks up a much stronger signal.
The company I go through let me do a free trial of it for a couple of days and it is much faster and much more reliable than an air card. They give this modem thing and help you find the strongest signal in your home. Check with your local provider, they will probably send a sales rep to your house to demonstrate it for you so you don't have to worry about driving to their office, they will probably pick it up for you if you are not happy with it.
A lot of people like HughesNet but there have also been a lot of complaints about it. Check out Mobile Broadand Internet before you decide to decide to sink a lot of money into a HughesNet or a WildBlue system. (If HughesNet or WildBlue works out for you than great.)
I hope this helps, good luck!

One of the best options for your situation is freelance writing. You don't need high speed Internet for that. You can use dial up Internet. Try NetZero.
You'll only need to use it to search Google for research (or offline materials) and to upload content to the companies you're working for. I hope that helps.

Katey, do you have any idea if this would work in an area with bad cell service?
I'm in the same boat, no DSL.. no cable, and no cell service :( I refuse to go with Hughes or Wildblue, so I'm SOL and stuck in dial up hell!! :(

Although I wouldn't be one to recommend any internet service, there are also other ways to make money does not require a good internet connection.
My blog has many outlets and different ways to earn extra money!
Granted most "good" job positions are going to require a good internet speed, one that you will be able to upload and download very quickly.
As always, whoever you may apply with ask what their policies are and see if there a chance you can waive a certain rule, etc.
Show off your assets and many companies will be willing to work for you!
Best of luck to you!

Hi Kelbell,
I do not get a very strong signal where I am at, I live in one of those places where your cell phone won't work in certain spots, but when the sales person came out to do the demo I have to say it worked really well - my Internet speed was about 10 times faster. Check with your local provider and see if they'll do a demo for you. Good luck and I hope it works for you!
