Hi there!
I am a recent graduate in Medical Transcription. I am having some difficulty finding a legitimate company to begin working in the field. Most only ask for "experienced" transcribers...this is a problem as we all need to start somewhere right??
I would love some advice/assistance in this matter. Thank you for your time!

Even if they state experience is required, go ahead and apply anyway. Sometimes they'll give a newbie a chance.
As a matter of fact, I could swear I saw a Medquist job ad the other day that said they would accept a new graduate under a special new grad program, but when I looked for that ad just now, I don't see it anymore. I think it said they only had room for 2, so maybe they pulled the ad when it was filled.
Anyway, send your resume in reply to lots of job ads, try to test for as many companies as you can. If you do well on their test, they may take you on without experience.
Also, try smaller MT companies...sometimes their hiring requirements aren't as strict as the bigger companies. Look for local MT service providers too.
Good luck.

Apply wherever you possibly can! You never know. Make sure you have a good resume. Most companies will have a "Careers" or "Jobs" section on their site somewhere.

I'm considering taking the MTE course but if it's that hard to find a job do I really want to go that route??

You can always start with general transcription and if you find you like it and can do it, then you can always go to school for medical and become certified.
There's plenty of places that will hire newbies in GT.

Hi Erin,
I'm just wondering which transcription course did you complete to get certified. I'm really having hard time to find legitimate MT online schools. Could you tell me about the course you've done? Positive/negative any suggestions are fine.
Thanks much!

In order to actually be a certified MT, you need to take a CMT exam. They require at least 2 years of experience in an acute-care or multispeciality equivalent setting. Of note, CMT credential is not the same as graduating from an MT school. When you graduate from an MT program, you receive a certification of completion. I know some schools might offer an associate's degree in applied science.
The top 3 MT schools seem to be Andrews (http://www.andrewsschool.com/), Career Step (http://careerstep.com/courses/medical-transcription-intro/?uid=org|ahdi), and M-TEC (http://www.mtecinc.com/).
Of course, there are other AHDI approved MT schools. There are different tuition options per school; some may offer Pell grants, loans, payment plans, and etc. The list of AHDI approved schools is here (http://www.ahdionline.org/Careers/FindanApprovedMTSchool/tabid/251/Default.aspx).

I'm not a medical transcriptionist, but on my search of a few companies to apply to I came across GlobeSpanMedical.com and noticed it welcomes anyone who has just graduated from a MT program.
I know nothing about the company so please do your research, but it might be worth looking into if you haven't already. Good luck! :)

Hi PixieX,
Thanks for the links. I had already looked at those AHDI approved MT schools. But, I want to talk to a person who has actually done this program through any of those schools. I want to enroll into MT program but, want to make sure that I spend my hard earned money on legitimate and reputed school. Let me know, if you know somebody who has finished this program..
Thanks,
Jessie

I've done QA on many new MTs who had graduated from M-Tec and CS.

I understand. I'm actually in my last quarter at EvCC, who utilizes Career Step's curriculum. I can only speak from my own experience, and I must say I am extremely pleased at the information/education I received from Career Step.

Hi MTHome & PixieX,
Thank you so much for your input. I really appreciate it. I'm going to decide among Andrews, M-TEC and Career Step.
Thanks much!
