do you go all the way back to basic consultant level or do you just go down one? For instance, if an AM can't maintain, do they go to DM or to square 1?

I believe they go down 1. You have the "maintenance period" where you can rebuild and not have to say you are the lower level.

If you are an AM and can't maintain, you will be dropped to DM. However, you will keep your AM title for 6 months. You just won't be paid as an AM.
To get AM back, you would have to go through the entire qualification period again.
If you can't maintain DM, you will drop to consultant.
To get AM back, you would have to go through the entire qualification period again.
