I was at a Spring Carnival this weekend at a school and lets say it was a learning experience. First, I don't think I will ever set up at a school as mostly kids came. Maybe we were in the wrong section of the building (at the end of a long corridor far from the entrance). I don't think its what I was selling (jewelry) as there were consultants from Tastefully Simple, candles, Uppercase Living, etc.
I am just wondering if I am being too hasty and should try it again, but be closer to the front of the building where all the action is. Has anyone ever did an event at a school? and if so, what were your experiences?

I usually buy my TS items from the school vendor events. I find it convenient, especially when they have their inventory and it's cash and carry. It sounds like the event wasn't promoted to parents enough...maybe they thought it was an event for the kids?

I found that I didn't really sell much (or any at all) but got lots of good leads and parties booked. However I always seemed to be near the TS ladies and they always seemed to do great. Those yummy samples will hook ya every time.
Don't completely give up on the school events yet. They can lead to something great. But do ask for a better location.

Suzette,
It sounds like your location may have been a problem. If you are way far away from where the action is, your guest visits will diminish the further away you are from people. See if you can get a better location next time.
Was this promoted more as a 'kid' event? If so, someone didn't do any party plan/direct sales reps a favor by having them there. If it was to encourage parents to participate, then I'd give it another chance. Sometimes, due to people's work schedules, kid's schedules, and just plain life, these events are the only places some parents are exposed to our companies and products.
And stand in front of your table. If a TS rep can entice with food, you can entice folks to your table by asking something like, "Oh! I love your top! Would you mind trying this (necklace) on? I'd love to see how it looks on that fabric...." All about engagement! :)
