View Full Version : How to Protect Online Pics?

Hi, I just started a new blog where I post my Photoshop artwork. This blog is just a sort of motivator for me to finally learn Photoshop inside and out. (I've been using PS for 6 years now and STILL don't know what I'm doing most of the time--but I do have fun smileys/smiley1.gif.)

My question is, are there ways to protect pictures online or is the 'Net just considered a free for all? The only way I can think of to protect work is by putting some sort of identification (watermark?) on it. I also remember vaguely there is a way to disable the right-click menu; is this method outdated?

Thanks for any advice!

The best way is to put a watermark on them, but then you have the drawback of changing how your image actually looks.

you can disable right-clicking on your page, but it's pretty easy to get around that.

i'd say that bottom line: if people really want to steal an image you put on your site, it's pretty hard to stop them, so you might as well watermark it so you claim it as your own if they try to re-use it.

anyone that is proficient in photoshop can remove watermarks as well, but with well placed watermarks, it is very time consuming and someone would have to REALLY want to steal your image to go to that much trouble.

Chadd gave you some excellent advise. I was going to recommend pretty much the same thing. lol

Please let us know when your pictures are up. I would like to take a look at them. :)

Chadd, thanks foryour advice. I'll try using a watercolor and see how it works out. Hee hee, I don't think anyone is going to "REALLY want to steal" my images--I'm not a PS professional (that's for sure). But I would like to get credit if anyone ever (and we're talking slim chance here) wanted to copy a pic.

TeresaK, here's a link (http://www.photoshopediting.blogspot.com) to my blog. It's in its baby stage right now. The semester will be ending in a couple of weeks, and I hope to do more involved images.

Thanks, TeresaK. I'm baby-stepping my way into Photoshop; I hope to get more involved with PS techniques when school lets out.

disabling right click still doesn't prevent a person from getting your files. JavaScript is easily blocked and if anyone wants a picture bad enough. It's always in the temp directory as well as you can simply download the whole page. watermark is the best idea as long as it's not one that can be easily removed.
