I am a medical transcriptionist with spare time. I have seen many opportunities to fill my time with video transcription. Can anyone tell me how to approach a potential client on this; for example do I ask for the video or just the audio? How do I get a video into a wav or mp3 audio... do they usually transfer the audio...I have a great foot pedal and all the latest equipment, can convert mp3 or dss to wav, etc...but I am afraid to move forward because I have no understanding of this area. Please help! I saw one that was U TUBE video and it required a special software. HELP!!

As with many things in the transcription world, there really aren't any hard and fast rules about these things. I do a lot of video transcription, so I'll share what's worked for me.

In most cases, a video can be pretty easily transcribed from the audio. I use a program called Audacity (which I believe is free for download) to convert videos to mp3. Some clients may be willing to provide an audio file instead of (or in addition to) the video. In some cases, for instance in entertainment transcription, you may need information from the video itself for the transcript. There are a number of ways to handle this. One is to transcribe from a converted audio file and then proof to video. Also, I believe the most recent version of ES will allow video playback. I'm on Linux and don't use ES, so don't quote me on that.

There are also tools available to help you download flash content from places such as YouTube. I use an add-on for Firefox called Ant Video. I then either convert the flv file that's generated into an audio file with Audacity, or transcribe it directly from the video. There are also websites, such as savevid.com, that will convert flv to mp3 or mp4 for you to download. There's some concern with many of those sites that they might employ spyware or malware. As far as I know savevid is safe, but I prefer to download the content directly rather than going through a website for conversion. YMMV.

Yes, you can use ES to do video transcribing, version 5.04 and later.
