View Full Version : Those selling books...

I have to ask.

I bought an awesome book for my 6 year old yesterday at Borders. She hasn't put it down since I brought it home. I just noticed now that it's published by a Direct Sales book company.

Since these are sold at Borders, isn't that hurting the reps that sell from home or is the company split into retail and direct sales. It just doesn't seem right to me.

When I saw that name at the top of the book, I had to scratch my head. But no wonder she loves that book! I have spent large amounts of money on books for my kids when I'm working craft fairs. Kind of cuts into my profit, but they're soooo cool!

(edited to say that I didn't use the name of the company JUST in case they're not allowed to be used on Message boards.smileys/smiley2.gif)Edited by: OhioBunny

Was it DK? If so, I don't believe they are a DS company anymore and I have seen a lot of their books in bookstores. I actually think they might have been sold or re-organized into a new DS book company that opened recently. I sold for them years ago when they were first here in the US and loved their books!

No... the name begins with a "U".

LOL... it must be Usborne smileys/smiley2.gif Some of our books are sold in retail stores, but the key word is SOME. It doesn't hurt our sales really at all because you can only get a select few at the store verses over 1300 through a consultant, AND the customer service from the rep, the ability to have a show and get the books for free, and the guarantee that comes with our books through us only.

So no, doesn't really hurt us much smileys/smiley4.gifWhat book did you buy? I just order more yesterday and my 2 year old can't wait for them to get here!

If you mean Usborne, I think it's okay to say the name. I'm not aware of any reason why you wouldn't be unable to.

I sell Usborne; no one has ever mentioned it to me that they could get a book in a store. I know we sell a few titles maybe 20-30 at some of the larger book stores but we have almost 2,000 titles soI don't feel its a problem, it's about 2-3%?

We also have a forum on this board, it's under the party plan listings, Usborne Books.

I don't believe anyone else has had this problem either, not that they've mentioned on our company message boards. Again, it's a pretty insignificant number.

Ok cool! I just didn't think it was in the best interest of the reps to have the books being sold retail.... but as long as you all are ok, then I'm ok too!

I bought some of the searching books, one of them is something like City Search or something, where you have to find all sorts of little things in a big messy page. My kids love those. Keeps 'em occupied for hours. (she has them stashed in her room already)

I have a little book worm here for sure. I always spend lotson books for them whenever I run into an Usborne rep.

Good luck to you all!

Well run into me and spend some money! LOL smileys/smiley4.gifThose search books are great!! My daughter loves all of the touchy feely ones and now she's gotten her little sister into them too!

Do you have shows or catalogs shows to get books for free or just buy full price? smileys/smiley2.gif
