I just wanted to say something about upline support. I know there are a lot of people on this board & other boards who really don’t have it. There are a variety of reasons for that to be the case. <?:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />

Yes, it sucks. And I hate that for anyone who doesn’t have it. This business is all about being in business for yourself but not by yourself. However OUR success is not dependent on our upline. I read something really good on another board this morning that is so true. There are many unsuccessful IC’s who have amazing upline support just as there are many successful IC’s who have no upline support.

How can that be? Because this is our business, not theirs. Is having upline support valuable? Yes. Is it better to have it? Yes. But if you don’t then you have two choices, & it’s the same choices that those who do have the support need to make as well at some point. You have to choose to take responsibility for your business, do the consistent activity your business demands & choose to be a leader for yourself & your team. Or you can choose to not do any of that & have a business that stagnates.

My sponsor quit. Luckily for me I have an amazing RVP who stepped in & mentors me. If I didn’t have her to step in would it have made a difference to me & my business? No, not really b/c I was already teaching myself on my own even when my sponsor was doing the business. I chose to take advantage of all the training our company offers. I chose to get on boards like this one to get support & advice. I chose to seek out the industry guru’s & read books & listen to CDs they offered.

There are also lots of open meetings for people to attend who are on their own. Other groups will most likely welcome you in to their trainings. There are people on this board who are willing to step in & be a mentor.

Yes it is very important to choose your upline wisely b/c you do want that support if you can get it. But if you can’t it is not the end of your business unless you choose for it to be.

Perfect example is my NVP. She floated along in the company just playing in the business, enough to maintain. Her sponsor quit the business though it ended up just being for a year. But in that year my NVP actually started working the business. She realized that “if it’s to be it’s up to me” & took control. She started doing the things that leaders do. She started having the meetings at her house, training herself & them. They saw what she was doing & started doing it too. Her & her team started having success & it just kept snowballing. Before she knew it she was an RVP & then an NVP. At the time she was the youngest NVP if I remember correctly.

She is actually thankful that her sponsor quit for that year b/c it forced her to step up to the plate. Would she be where she is now if her sponsor had never quit? Who knows, probably if there was another catalyst. (9/11 was also a catalyst for her so there were a couple of factors) But something had to force her out of her comfort zone & make her take that control. And it taught her a lot.

My point in all this is to not give up & surrender your future to someone else whether you have a great upline or not. Either way it’s you who have to do the activity & make your business work. You can be successful regardless!

*edited to add that perhaps those of you who don't have the level of support you would like can talk about how you've filled the void.. If you feel comfortable sharing. Your stories & ideas may help some others on the board who feel like they are floundering. Edited by: Soonergirl74

Excellent post!- As you all know,I am a Mary Kay Consultant and the same things apply in our business as well. In fact the woman who recruited my Sales Director quit 6 months after recruiting her, so just like you- she had to learn and do the business on her own. It helped her become strong and now she has had 28 years of success behind her. Thank you for sharing your thoughts- this post is a keeper Edited by: facedesigndiva

There will be people above and below who will quit. And there are people above and below you who will remain and grow their business faster than you. I prefer to follow the later group and set my goals to stay up with them. IT'S UP TO YOU!!!

What do you PLAN on doing today???

Have a prosperous day!!!

Thanks so much for sharing that - I have been thinking the same a lot lately as well - My original sponsor quit my second week - almost 4 years ago - so I taught myself, sought out my own mentors, and it worked fine - my sponsors upline isn't really there for me at all - which is fine - I have used lots of reasources out there to learn and grow and become quite resourceful because of it -

the other portion of this is that with our teams - I have had to learn that we cannot make our team members what we want for them - they have to have the passion and want it - when they step forward and ask for help and show some initiative then I step forward too and do all I can to help them - I offer out my assistance and ideas on a regular basis but if they reject - I had to learn to let that lie - I can't make those seeds grow - they just fell on rocky ground and that's OK -

Thanks for reminding us of this - I do hope it helps to inspire others to jump up and actively pursue the dreams and goals they have and find those resources and mentors - there are so many out there -

Thanks again

Meg

Oh Meg, boy did I need to hear that today......my team is definetly not where I'd like them to be.....but it's just that..where I'd like them to be. It's not where they'd like to be. I've made the decision that I'm finding a new team this month.....after all April showers bring May flowers!!! I hope it rains alot this month, especially at NTC...I'm bringing some of those "sprouts" with me!!! smileys/smiley17.gif

Have a great weekend Ar*o*nn"ians"

Great point to add Meg. Thanks for sharing that part also.

It is so easy for us to see the potential in people, much easier than it is for themselves. As a sponsor you want so much for your downline & it's easy to want it too much. But you are right, they have to not only want it for themsleves but do the activity it takes as well. That part we can't do. And if they choose not to then we have to accept that & meet them where they are at that moment. Letting them know we are there if & when they are ready. But loving them either way.

Being an upline can be difficult sometimes. None of us are born leaders, everyone has to learn to become leaders. It's not really a skill that is taught in school. It's easy to make mistakes & hard to admit when we do, lol. When people are looking to you for guidance it can be scary!

I'm so thankful that we are with a company with so many amazing leaders for us to learn from. I think the good leaders easily outweigh the bad. It's so inspiring to see ordinary women & men who started out just as clueless as I am become the people they are now. smileys/smiley1.gif
