View Full Version : Internet Speed for Online Tutoring

Hi, everyone. So I know I'm still pretty new to working at home, and this is the big thing I'm confused about.
I had an interview earlier this morning with an online tutoring site, for which I had applied to the day before. He sent me a weblink via Skype so I could go test my Internet speed. Then, he told me that my download speed was too slow, and that he would not progress with the interview until I could find a way to speed up my connection.
Well, first of all, it was pretty awkward. Thankfully, we weren't speaking to each on Skype; we were just typing. But he didn't come out and tell me that he had to stop the interview until after a couple of awkward pauses.
So now, here are my questions: How slow is too slow? He told me his company needed 10 Mbps for download speed (and I know my computer is capable of that). How do I get the speed I need in order to pursue these jobs? I am defragging my computer; I've cleared my browser history, Temp folders, and cookies; I have emptied folders. I don't need to buy a new computer. My modem was given to me and my husband by the school where my husband works. We live in Taiwan right now; is our current location affecting my Internet speed? We have to share an Internet network with someone else; does that affect Internet speed too?
What else should I do in order to speed up my Internet? Any help you guys can give me will be so appreciated.

I don't know if you're using wireless at all, but that slows down speeds quite a bit for tutoring. I've been told by a couple of companies I couldn't use a wireless network, within the house, or one that is not hardwired cable outside the house.

Right, he did ask me about wireless, but we don't use wireless at our apartment. We're hooked up to ADSL/DSL.
Does where we live make a difference? My husband and I are living in Taiwan right now (he's an English teacher), and we live on the campus of the school where he teaches. We also found out that after our Internet got knocked out briefly in a typhoon that our network is the same as the kindergarten that is just downstairs from our apartment.
The guy told me to call him back once I get my Internet speed up, but I'm not sure if I will. He left me hanging during the interview after he told me my speed was too low, and when I tried to ask him some questions about it, he said he was going to pass on the interview. I thought that was kind of rude. <shrug> Oh, well.

You know what? I'd try another company. I don't know if DSL speed is slower than cable, but I would imagine there is a company that would hire you. They've got to understand about things like typhoons. There are lots of online English tutoring companies out there. I'd encourage you to find one you feel comfortable with.

o teach (and tutor) virtually. While distance learning...collaborative multimedia software designed for schools and high-speed Internet connections have ...one professor who works mainly online and makes six figures.
Would you mind sharing which company this person works for. I teach online and make below the poverty level
