I didn't have any work to do on friday so I spent some time on odesk scanning for jobs and taking some of their tests. It was time consuming. Is it worth it? I have also applied for some jobs on elance. I have given up on getafreelancer.com the money is just way too low there. Have you guys found that to be a problem on a lot of sites?

I have used Odesk and I did get some work from there, but many of the providers will work for low pay especially the ones from other countries.

Hello. I had my blog created by hiring from a site like Odesk.
I know lots of home business owners that use sites like that to outsource different parts of their business.
They are wonderful to use. It helps when you have great reviews/references.
Have a great rest of the weekend!

Good Morning!
I have worked a few jobs through odesk. the key is to apply up to your quota. When you are starting out there it may seem like it is never going to pan out but I loved working thru there. As long as you are working an hourly paying job thru them you are guarannteed to get paid. I had a few virtual assistant jobs thru there as well as some transcribing. The more test you take to certify your skills the more jobs you can apply to. I worked for one client thru there for over 6 months till i ended the job due to things at home. Finding your niche is important and apply to all those you think you would like. depending on the job the budgets are slightly low. elance the budgets seem higher but i never had any hits from there at all.
freelance.com i think it is is another one i have gone thru. it is a little time consuming going thru the jobs and things but can be worth it in the end. good luck!

Thanks for shareing your experiences. At this point I think I like odest the best simply because I can apply for more jobs at a time. I'm going to keep at and see what happens.

I haven't gone there for work recently but when I first started out I tried all of the popular sites like guru.com, getafreelancer.com, elance, scriptlance. rentacoder, and probably more. Then I found odesk and tried it out(it was actually funny because the owner was just getting started more or less and posted a comment on my blog about not having to work for $1-$3 an hour if you went to odesk.) Now though, I don't know if it is because there are so many people from other countries who can work for $1-$3 but it seems like that is becoming the norm. As I am now used to making $15-$25/hr, I hate having to go get something so low if I don't need to.
But I must admit, it was one of the best places to learn from. I don't know about anyone else, but I actually enjoyed taking the tests and took like 20 of them. There are tons of jobs you can apply for and the fact that you can apply for quite a few at a time does make it worth looking into. Once you have been on there for like 6months to a year, you should be able to feel comfortable enough to go find your own clients or even start getting word of mouth passed around.
I have been a ghostwriter/VA for a little over 3 years now and it wasn't until this year that things have started coming together. Don't forget to go to forums like warrior.com and selfstartersweekly.com/forum to learn new things and see about posting up your services. also one of the best resources for me and often a place you can find subcontracting jobs as well as other free business tools and such is
Virtual Assistant Forums | Virtual Assistant Network (http://www.virtualassistantforums.com/)
This is an excellent place to find all the help you need.
But as for odesk, I would say if you are new and want to learn as much as you can and start getting jobs to see how they go, then by all means go with odesk over some of the other cheapo places that aren't as friendly.

I have been on oDesk for about 2 years now and must say it is a great platform. However, lately even I, with over 100 jobs completed on oDesk, am finding it difficult to get decent jobs. I think oDesk is getting saturated now.
Elance is way better and the pays there are still good. Highly Recommended.

If you want more info, you should do a search here within this forum. I believe there are several wahm's who have created free e-books on the subject.
I'd read those first so you can learn all the shortcuts and methods to get the better jobs before you start. (cut your learning curve)
best wishes.

It was good earlier. But, it's now crowded with cheap things. Don't work for cheap, the quality of service will suffer.

Do not go to these types of places. Raj from India will work for $2.22 per hour and they will choose him regardless of his English skills. I worked there but found it too frustrating due to lack of clear and concise instruction from the employer. Go to social networks like Linkedin and get all the jobs you can handle (and keep all the money!)

I have profiles on those sites but don't bid - a few times a year I'll get an offer from them that falls into what I think I deserve to be paid
I didn't really take Twitter seriously for marketing but have had an account for years - Several clients have told me they found me thru twitter by searching for VAs

I have been working in odesk for odesk for a year now. As long as you have continuous networks (finding work continuously), you will have no problem with weely income. However, I agree with others here that it is getting hard to find decent adequate paying companies lately. I believe many are posting for lower rates.

Debbie’s gap life – or how she found satisfying and well paid jobs online (http://bit.ly/Idl1Ly) This is a great article with full details on how this lady got work on Linkedin. Everything from profile to searching and connections. Enjoy! I have gotten work there myself...plenty. Takes some time to set up but after that it is easy to maintain. If you're a one person show like me, you could get more than you can handle.
