I am currently looking to leave a 12 year retail career to stay at home. My husband and I are moving to our new home this month. So I need to keep working and I want to work from home making a decent income. Any advice on good jobs and companies to apply for? How does telecommuting work for you? How can it work for me?

Well it really depends on what you are wanting to do, if you are looking for genuine telecommuting work (ie. hourly pay as opposed to comission, business opportunities, etc.) then an at home CSR or sales position might fit you perfectly. When I first left the wonderful world of retail management, I started working with West At Home taking calls at home. Generally you can find an hourly position taking calls, and many of them will offer some sort of bonus structure for add-on sales, etc.
Of course it also depends on how much money you want/need to make working from home. I know with West if you work mainly daytime you can expect somewhere around minimum wage +/- a few bucks. I worked the graveyard shift about two years ago, taking calls between 10 PM and 2 AM and ended up making around $20-$25 an hour because of the higher call volume, pay rate due to the time, and bonuses. If you need some at home CSR type companies, look at the WAH company listing stickied at the top of this forum, it's a really great resource and lists a ton of companies hiring at-home customer service and sales people.

You need to read the Company list sticky, the New Members Start Here sticky, and the posts in this folder. There are tons of job leads so just read and apply and you'll be working in no time. Good luck.

I see a lot of customer service related jobs posted in this section of the forum. Maybe your retail experience would help with that? And you could play up your experience working with and helping customers.
Good luck. :)
