hope I'm not asking a stupid question here,
but I started burning a new jar candle that
i got from someone but before
it could burn long enough so that the
top layer was melted on this very
first burn I had to suddenly leave
the house and blew it out.

Now that I got it off to a bad start I can't
get it to burn evenly, especially the top
sides of the candle/jar.

Any tips to correct?

Not a dumb question, and I have done the same thing. Here is what I did:

I let it burn for a really long time the next time I lit it (I have had to do this several times and it has worked each time for the most part). When that still doesn't quite even it up, I literally get a butter knife--there has been one part that refuses to let go of the sides, and I have forced it down. Again, letting the candle go for awhile should help it to correct itself, and if not you can "scrape" the excess wax from a stubborn side down.

That has always worked for me when I got the candle off to a bad start. Just like you said, I would light it and get it going and have to leave before the pool of wax was even all around.

Let me know!
