I've customized Coppermine photo gallery in the past for a church website. It's free (open source)

I think Photo shop can also do this job for you. But you need to be very much expertise if you are looking for something photo gallery related things.

I like it because it's versatile. Of course there's a bit of a learning curve, but it's not like you have to be fully versed in JavaScript to manipulate it :)

Personally I just make a flash portfolio for gallery's using an xml base so its easy to add and take away as needed. Works great for clients too as its very simple even for those who are not so 'savvy' in code
