Another good place for free ebooks is your public library. Most states have a consortium of sorts where they combine their ebooks and you can go online and "check out" the books. You must have a library card for your local library before you can check out books. When you find a book you want, if it is already checked out you can put it on hold just like you do at the regular library. Once it becomes available you can check it out and depending on the book, it will be good for one to two weeks. After that, it automatically checks itself back in and the file you downloaded will no longer work.
Another great source for older and reference material is Google Books (http://www.books.google.com).
