OK, I've been being quiet because I didn't know how this was going to work out. You see, I've always built my own desktop computers for the past several years and the last "total" build I did was back in 2004. I upgraded it about 14 months ago with more RAM and it kept on chugging right along.
Then bless its thumpin' gizzard, it decided to choke and die ... It was a good ol' girl. Plenty of memory, robust and ran well. A real workhorse of a machine. AND my beloved 28" monitor died as well at the same time :(
Life was looking grim and I needed to be able to work. My other half's dinosaur IBM notebook computer was good for a pinch hit, but it just really doesn't have the gusto it needs for the jobs that we do.
SO ... off to Walmart I went and purchased my FIRST ever Store Bought computer! Wow, what a deal!!! I got an HP Pavillion dv7 Notebook PC, with AMD Turion II Ultra-core Mobile M60 2.40 Ghz, 4 GB RAM, 64-bit operating system. It also has 640 GB hard drive. It has a built in web-cam (haven't played with it yet), I can watch television on it, and it has a BlueRay player that also plays everything else including dual layer DVDs.
I came home with my new toy and faced a brand new operating system with some trepidation. I had never upgraded to Vista. Windows XP Professional was working so well for me and now i was skipping all the way to Windows 7 !!!
Here is my experience for the past 22 days. Out of the box, never having worked with Vista OR Windows 7, this new machine has been an absolute DREAM!!! I am so excited. It has buttons, bells, and whistles on it that I haven't even explored as yet.
Overall the Operating System was very easy to adjust to. It runs all my old 32-bit software like Office 2003 etc., and also runs all the new 64-bit programs as well. It has two sets of "program files" folders marked for each type of software and also moved where you find applications and data from Documents and Settings over to a folder called Users.
That was the worst part of the adjustment for me. Oh, and now I have "Libraries" instead of "Documents and Settings" that contain My Documents, Music, Pictures and Videos.
Since I do not like/trust Norton's products the first thing that I did was disable all of those and put on Avast Pro and MalwareBytes. Installed my Office 2003 software, Firefox and all the stuff we need to work with.
As for how I have faired working. It is SWEET!!! I can open all the tabs that I need and not run out of memory, it just keeps running and running. AND it is SO QUIET!!! I didn't realize how "noisy" my desktop machine had become.
My only complaint is I haven't replaced my 28" monitor yet. The new laptop has 18" screen so it isn't too bad, but I am SO majorly spoiled!
So far this is a great machine if you are looking to upgrade in the future.

yep, I love Windows 7! I couldn't stand Vista but W7 is great! I have absolutely no complaints yet and have had it since their first beta release early last year. DH put my computer together last May and if it wasn't for the crazy Firefox crashes, I'd have absolutely no issues.

I am also working on a HP notebook with Windows 7 64bit, a G61 model. I second the recommendation. Reliable work machine.

I didn't realize what a nightmare Vista was until I had to go back to it from Windows 7. I was running the 7 Release Candidate, and it ran out. I figured oh well, I've got a Vista license. I installed it and was blown away by how much better 7 is. I immediately scored myself a Windows 7 license and reinstalled. Life is good again :).
