I know that if you just leave rings off your fingers for a few days, the green that they turn your finger just clears up, but the rings themselves sometimes also turn a blackish. My question is, is there anything I can do to the ring itself, not to prevent the greening on the finger, but to prevent discoloration of the ring itself? I have tried clear nail polish but this doesn't really seem to help in the long term.

You could try using lemon. I use it for cleaning my silver jewelery. The acid in the lemon acts as a cleaning agent. Just try not to leave your jewelery in the lemon juice for too long. :)
