When designing web page it should be ensured that the homepage of the website should have consistent patterns and the usage of various designs elements should be symmetrical as home gently brings consistent pattern, thus aiding user experience.

I think the most useful tip, and I hate to be blunt cause people will probably get offended at some point, is this:
Realize you're not a good designer, developer, etc. leave it to the people that are, and find something else to bring the money in.
I'm always astonished at the "web designers" out there who want to create web sites for others, but there own isn't even nice.

Brad,
This is something I can really agree with most of the time but I have also seen those already established designers that thier sites design is not great but their portfolio looks awesome. I am always curious if they outsource or neglect thier own site. I am currently going through a New Year Revamp myself and converting over to wordpress which is slightly new learning curve for me.

I've seen some designers outsource even their own business website. I've found some with the link to the designer on the footer of their site
I think if you're a web designer, you should design your own site, at least.

I'll be honest...
Our site gets pretty neglected. It is probably the site we spent the least amount of time on.
The reasoning though is pretty simple. We get most of our clients by proactively going after them, not by waiting for them to visit our website.
In fact, most of the customers who need our services, honestly are not on the internet looking for us.
That has been our experience anyhow.

I couldn't agree with you more than a designer should design thier site unless it is a firm in which case the lead designer needs to design the site. Every site I have owned I have designed myself.
