View Full Version : Do you work in your pajamas?

I was once told by an employer that what you wear directly affects your productivity at work.
Do you feel that you are more or less productive based on your attire? Do you get any work done in the morning when you're still in your pj's? Do you wait until you are properly dressed to start your workday?

Nah, I work in whatever I feel like wearing at the moment. I even just go the school and pre-k wearing my night time clothes, which is really just sweatpants and a tank top. Of course, they know that's not how I always dress.. I do get dressed up to go out. I mean, what's the point of getting all dolled up to sit at my desk? Nobody sees me except me. That's how I feel about it :-D

I have several "silky" Kaftans that look like silk blouses that I wear. Comfort and "dressy" incase there is a webcam teleconference when sitting at the desk.

I go around the house wearing my pajamas till the midday and can do a lot of things. I do not care what do I have on when I have the desire to work! The clothes can influence my work only when I am at office!

I love spending time in my night clothes.
I never really bought into productivity being linked to what you wear, I feel more like it's linked to being comfortable. I'm positive that I'm more productive in my pj bottoms and tank top than I am in heels, hose, skirts, and a button up blouse.

No I never work in my pj's!!
The reason is I feel more productive and professional. I also want my kids to know that is also expected of them too. In the morning I am up, showered dressed and have a cup of coffee before the kids wake up. Then I unload the dishwasher, while making breakfast. After breakfast we make beds and get the kids dressed. I am NOT a morning person I hate mornings but I get more done during the day this way.
I think it is whatever works for you but this is the way it works best for me.

I usually work in my PJ's at night. However during the day I get up, take a shower, and get dressed before I start to work. I find that I'm more productive when I do this. :D

Yup! Are you kidding me?! That's half the reason I work from home!! LOL
I work best when I am comfortable, and I am most comfortable in my sweat pants and bare feet. It works for me!
I'm productive because I love what I do, I have a child to feed with my income, and I am motivated for my business to grow. It has nothing to do with what I am wearing. I can see how others would feel more productive when dressed for the day, but it doesn't work that way for me!

What could be better than working in your pj's? I feel more productive and comfortable in casual clothing and seem to get more work done. Who want's to dress up everyday? Isn't that the point of working at home anyway...so you can work in your PJ's?

I don't find that my attire affects my productivity. I need to be comfortable in order to be productive. During the day I am working while caring for a toddler and a newborn. I usually wear a tank top and sweat pants. At night when I work I am in my PJ's and loving it!

I love this question! :) I used to be a real corporate woman back in the day, but now when I wake up I do like to shower and do my hair, etc. The most I do in terms of clothing is put on a pair of jeans and a casual shirt... so I guess it is a step up from pjs but not full on professional attire... funny!

I think that this varies by person. I happen to be a person who gets showered, dresssed, etc for work, even though my office is at home and only a few feet away. (Note, I am not saying that I wear business attire, usually something comfortable. But my hair and makeup are always done). I am sure that it is psychological, however, I do feel more awake and alert in the morning when I have started my day this way. I know a lot of women who work from home and stay in their pj's; most are very productive. I think that the key is knowing what works for you.

I work in my pajamas and go to school in my pajamas! Well, I actually only have one of my classes online (I'm a full time student), but I agree with the sentiment of whoever said I don't need to get dressed up to sit at a desk. I don't have to deal with webcam conferences or anything so as long as I'm comfortable I just wear whatever. I don't think my productivity is affected at all.

I agree, I do just about everything in my PJs - Work & School and my productivity is not affected at all, in fact its a whole lot LESS distractions. Me being the fashionista I am working in my PJs gives me the ease of just focusing on the task at hand rather than making sure I am the jazziest. LOL

I personally am not effected by what I wear. That's one of the perks about working from home that I forget to appreciate. Just being able to wear comfty clothes. Now getting up and washing up, brushing teeth, maybe a little yoga and a green smoothie would help things.

I don't feel that I am less productive while wearing my PJ's. I think I get more done because I am comfortable and can just be me. Aside from working from home I am a skin care specialist and don't think my clients would take me seriously in my PJ's : )

I am the type that gets more done when I'm dressed. I am a morning person too and that is when I am most productice. If I get dressed early I get WAY more done than when I'm in PJ's. I'm new to the WAH arena so I still feel like it is "Time Off" when I stay in my PJ's!

Because of the heat, I work best in a bikini ... lol
Nobody can see me and besides I don't care as long as I get through my list for the day.
But, the shower, teeth, hair and make up is done before I get started too ... just in case someone calls.
You can always throw something on but me without hair and make up done!!! ... now that is different

Yes, I work in my pajamas all the time. However, everyday I set a goal to get dressed before 9 a.m. I feel I am much more productive when I get dressed first and then start my work day. That way if I have to run errands or go to my store location, then I am already dressed and ready to go. :p

In the mornings, before I can do much of anything I have to get dressed and out of my pjs. Although, I don't go all out. It's usually into something really comfy like jogging pants, capris and t-shirts..sometimes even my hubby's t-shirts if it's laundry day! :) The reason being is I have this fear of the UPS guy or someone selling cookies showing up at my door and me having to scramble around and get dressed before being able to open it...silly, I know! lol. However, in the morning is when I usually do my research - so I'm not really doing a whole lot.
I do the majority of my typing (real work) in the early-late evening after my toddler has had dinner, bath, etc...and I am usually ALWAYS in my pjs then!
I don't really feel like I'm more productive if I'm "properly" dressed or not. And I definately don't feel more professional one way or the other. I'm sitting in front of a computer screen and no one can see me except my family. For this reason, I LOVE what I do!!

I find what I'm wearing has little to do with how much I get done so I work in whatever suit my mood and many times that is my jammies! I think this is just one of the perks of working from home. No makeup, no primping, just comfy!!!
That being said if I'm having a face to face............you bet I've got my makeup on, my clothes appropriate, etc. but find me on a regular at home day and you'll find me extremely relaxed!

I use to work in my pajamas but I wasn't as productive as to when I get up, shower, get dressed, do my hair, and put on a little make-up.
Once I changed into this routine, my productivity greatly increased. Event though I run my business from home I still want to be productive and get things done as if I was still in corporate America.

Well, some times I am completely naked (under a blanket of course). Does that count? I wear PJs or my birthday suit if I really don't FEEL like working but I know I have to. I feel this is a benefit of working at home.
BUT I don't get as much done. Do you want to know why? It has nothing to do with me and all to do with the husband.
He does not value my work-at-home time as work if I am in my PJs. He knows that if I am dressed and up and running around on the phone or in and out of the office then I am WORKING. This usually means that he will pick up some slack if my daughter is fussy or just needs some parent time. If I am in my PJs then he knows it is a blah day and I am on the hook to deal with my daughter too.
We were talking the other day and I had to correct someone when they said I was a stay-at-home mom. I am not a SAHM; I am a WAHM. I don't know why that is undervalued but it is.
Currently, I make MORE than my hubby does at his job. I worry though because my main source of income will be drying up in 14 months (long story) and that means that I really need to plus up my at home efforts.
PJs or no PJs I keep a schedule of events AND a Things To Do Listing everyday. I am a planner and a note keeper. I also force myself to be accountable for my daily events. I have created a blog for my own benefit and I report to my hubby everyday on my work that day. He could care less, but my daily reporting makes me feel more productive and it forces him to realize that I am actually doing something when I stay at home.
I try to work at least six to ten hours a day with a minimum of 40 hours a week and I keep track of it somewhat. I allow myself time off for sickness or vacation, but I keep track of it too so it doesn't get out of hand. When I start making BIG dollars, then I will give myself a break. Right now I need to prove that my home efforts are going to work. I am starting another at home effort next month and I hope this one will lead to more time to breathe. I really can't wait until I get started on it.

I try and get dressed as soon as possible.. but usually don't get it together for several hours.
I'm married so I like to be 'presentable' for my husband. Wow, I just looked at what I wrote, and realize it probably sounds old fashioned. But I like to look nice for my husband, and so that is my chief motivation to get dressed and spiffed up, pretty early in the day.
The other reason is that I feel more productive.. I may not be, but I think I am!

I'm horrible! I roll out of bed and roll right to my computer to check emails...and skim through of all the main sites I participate on...THHENNN shower and everything else! LOL
Then I come back and really get to work! If I am comfortable everything else is peachy keen.
I just had a funny thought? Can you imagine getting up, doing all the morning stuff and then wearing a suit....to your desk!? LMBO! In heels and everything? LOL

in my opinion , when you are at work , you had better dress loose clothes because they make feel relax and let you pay attention to work . what another reason is that actually there are not many people noticing your clothes because they are so busy!

I allow myself to work in my PJs once a week (casual day ;) other days I make sure I get up and change my clothes. Not necessarily into business attire but I do shower, change and get ready as if I was getting ready to go to an outside office. Am I any less productive on casual day? No. I just think treating it as if I did have to go to work reminds me that I am working.

I was once told by an employer that what you wear directly affects your productivity at work.
Do you feel that you are more or less productive based on your attire? Do you get any work done in the morning when you're still in your pj's? Do you wait until you are properly dressed to start your workday?
Really, I thought I had replied in this thread already - but I skimmed back through the pages and didn't find "me" :o so here goes...
Like a few others have said, it depends on my mood and what else may be planned for the day ... stormy winter days like we have been having recently - I have been staying in my PJs, wrapped up in my fleece snuggie, sipping my hot tea or cocoa while I work here at my 'puter. :D
Other days I get "dressed" comfortably in leisure clothes - a step above sweatpants, with a sweatshirt, sweater, or other long-sleeved top.

I don't really agree with that. I do feel better about myself once I've done my hair and make-up, but I still wear pajamas if I'm at home! When I first get home the bra and jeans come right off. I would think being comfortable would be beneficial to getting more done.
I'm actually planning on sewing really cute and comfortable pajamas for myself. No reason why you can't be cute and comfortable. :)

I work best being comfortable, however after 11 years working from home I get best productivity from "trying" to dress the part. Which means I must get up, shower while tea or coffee is on and get dressed. Can be jeans and a tshirt. But I must get out of the "you're home" mentality.

It's very sad and I feel like since I have Work from home on my resume, or a job title that regular employers dont understand its even harder to get hired, when they are hiring pertaining to the same type of work, It scares me because I'm not sure to even list the jobs I did from home since where I'm from only a few or 1 handful think they all are unlegit. However I did need to laugh.

Yep sure do, with a baby even at 10 months old, who has time to get dressed up, or even brush their own hair. Not me. I barely even eat my own breakfast. I make sure she eats every meal first and foremost and is provided for and taken care of. And while she is napping I work or do school work. When I began working from home, working in my PJ's felt great!
Now, if I start work prior to 6:00 a.m., I'm in my PJ's, but once 6:00 a.m. rolls around,
I shower, comb my hair and even put on lipstick. I used to stay in my PJ's
all day and soon the novelty wore off and I felt like I was just "working from home,"
instead of being an independent contractor with my own business.
Once I started getting dressed every morning (jeans/t-shirt or pants and a nice
top), I began to feel more professional, and I see how I'm setting a
better example of seriously owning my own business for my teenage daughter
instead of being just her mom who works from home in her PJ's. :-)
I actually see the difference in her attitude.
Another plus is I can go shopping or handle an outside emergency
immediately.

I don't really feel like I'm ready for my day until I'm dressed. PJ's just don't make me feel like I'm being productive. I get up and throw on sweats to get my son off to school, but once he's out the door I need to get dressed and ready to start my day. I need to be able to respond to the door, the dogs needing to go out, getting the mail, etc. and I can't do those things if I'm still in PJ's. It's usually just jeans and a t-shirt, but I always need to be dressed to work. Plus, it sets a good example for my kids.

I work in my pajamas some of the time! I believe that if you feel good about yourself, then THAT is what is going to make you more successful and productive. If you think that you look good and you feel confident in what you are wearing, then it doesn't matter what you have on. It is all really just mindset.
Most days I will get up, shower, and get dressed before I do any work-even housework-and then there are some days that I just want to be relaxed and stay in my pj's until the middle of the day.
I would be more confident being well dressed if I had to go to an office and see clients face to face, but at home, my tone of voice and sincere desire to help people makes me successful.

I work in whatever moves me that day. I too had heard your work is affected by what you wear, and even if you're sitting at home you should get up and get dressed like you are going out. Most days it is my PJ's. I will say that the benefit of getting up and being dressed is that I don't have to rush and throw something on whenever the hubby decides he wants us to go to lunch at the last minute.;)

I'm weird in that I am uncomfortable being outside of my bedroom until I am fully dressed. Unless I am sick, I get dressed every morning before going downstairs, where this lovely computer awaits me. :-) I've always been that way, and I don't see me changing it anytime soon. I also wear my shoes (flip flops in the summer) all day long. I feel weird walking around the house barefoot. That might have something to do with 3 kids, 3 cats and a dog...never know what I might step in. :-)

I'm not a work from home mom yet, but when I do become one I will have no problem working from home in my pajamas. I don't see what difference it will make because no one will see you.
I understand the whole concept of your mood depends on how you feel and what you wear. However my rebuttal to that is if you're comfortable, you'll be able to conquer anything!

I never work in pj's. It would make me feel yucky. I don't dress like a million bucks, but I always shower and wear something presentable. I always go into town on my lunch hour too to get some interaction with live people. That wouldn't bode well for me in pajamas, lol..

I was once told by an employer that what you wear directly affects your productivity at work.
Do you feel that you are more or less productive based on your attire? Do you get any work done in the morning when you're still in your pj's? Do you wait until you are properly dressed to start your workday?
Most days, I start off in my PJs and get dressed around mid-morning. I do this so as not to wake my husband up since I'm up at dawn during the week. By the time he's up and about (he works at home, too), I've got several work hours under my belt, can take a break, get dressed, prepare breakfast, etc.
I don't think it makes me any more or less productive, though. As long as I'm comfortable, I can pretty much get the job done. That said, when I do get dressed, I tend to still wear something comfy.

I would have to agree that the clothes I wear affect my productivity. Not only that, but in order to feel like I can start the day I need to go through the routine of "getting ready." Brushing my teeth, putting my contacts in, etc.

as of right now, i do work in my pjs most mornigs as sometimes i am up at 5:00 a.m. to get some work in before the little one is up. ;) just all depends on what that day holds. now in the fall my little guy will be in prek and the need to get up and dressed first will come into play as i will have to take him to school each morning. :)

This sounds like me to a T. I get a few hours under my belt while I'm up with my little one and then I take a break to get dressed. I like to wear something comfortable, yet presentable. While it doesn't affect my productivity, it just makes me feel better to be dressed in something presentable so that I can be ready for whatever the day may bring.

I'm always in lounge clothes. T-shirt and either shorts or sweats depending on the season. I only get dressed if I have to go somewhere in public like to a school function. I don't mind running to the store or post office in my loungewear lol I'm kinda odd that way.

If I am working during the day I wear my jeans and a t-shirt. I get up in the morning, get dressed, make breakfast, make the beds, start the laundry and then get on my computer to work. I have always been like that...I have to get dressed to get started with my day. Even before I worked at home on my PC I have always gotten dressed before starting my housework.
If I ever work at night I work in my PJs if everyone else has already gone to bed. I just have to be comfortable. That's what makes me comfortable. So, it's usually jeans and barefeet. That way I am always dressed if someone happens to come by.

Yes, but only because I work into the dark, bitter, wee hours of the morning! After I fall asleep at my computer 2 or 3 times, it's easier just to fall into bed if I'm wearing pjs.:D

I'm not sure that I believe what I'm wearing makes a difference in how I work, but how I look certainly can...if I'm working face to face with someone. Over the phone or online, not so much.
I don't wear my pajamas, but that's only because I take my kiddos to their grandparents house while I work and I don't want to leave home in them!

Ugh, I hate when drop-in guests catch me working at home in my PJs, lol. I can so relate!
At the moment, I'm working in my bathrobe, but only because I got up to shower and there was a traffic jam in the bathroom. I started working until traffic died down, but got so engrossed in what I'm doing that it's now just before 1p and I'm still not dressed. lol
Productivity is the point. If that can be accomplished in PJs, more power to all and, if it can't...get dressed already! ;)

I work in my pjs just about everyday. I get up and go straight for the office then in the afternoon I'll take a shower and get dressed. The way I figure it is that the morning is my most productive time of the day. Why should I waste productive time getting dressed?

I work in my pajamas all the time. The reason is that I often start working very early in the morning before my kids get up. I want to be comfortable. I think that I would be more productive in the rest of my responsibilities if I actually got dressed, though. Because those wee early morning hours, often extend into the late afternoon hours. And I've been caught off guard when someone knocks on my door and/or totally unprepared when I have to run out unexpectedly. I still do it all the time, though.

DO I work in my PJs?
No, I do get dressed for the day in something comfortable before I make the 6 yard commute (and no....I didn't measure it...lol) from the kitchen to my "office". For me, it's a mind-set shift from "bed head" to "work brain". I also have neighbors that pop by since they know I work from home, and in-laws that live down the street and pop in from time to time as well.
I love being able to work from home and decide whether it's flip-flops with my shorts and t-shirts, or house shoes and a sweatsuit. :D
Have a blessed day,
Cynthia

I think people are going to be most productive when they feel comportable doing what they are doing.
your not going to be super productive doing any thing you dont like... or going somewhere you dont like.. in a job you dont like... so why not assume that you can be more productive wearing something you like??
I never leave my house in pjs. sweats are great tho. but im working right now in pjs while watching the history channel and i feel most productive in this exact setting :)

I tend to get more done, workwise and around the house, if I get dressed (and "dressed" to me is a tshirt and capris or jeans, year round!). With that said, I'm usually in my pajamas until mid morning, at least. I lack the motivation to get out of my comfy clothes early on most days. But yes, I do notice a difference if I get up and moving earlier, rather than later.
