That is going to be up to you whether or not you accept checks or not (from people that you dont know). You will just have to take your chances if you do.. As to accept cash only.. If you are going to do this I would then make sure you check into propay or something like that, so you can accept credit cards instead. If not you are likely to lose alot of sales by accepting cash only from customers that you dont know.
If it is a book show that you are doing, I would have the customers write the check to the hostess and then the hostess could write you a check for the total amount of the show. If you do decide to accept checks from strangers, You might feel more comfortable writing their drivers licesnse number on the check that you recieved.. good luck on your decission.. But do check into propay, It is not expensive, and it would elimate your accepting cash only from strangers, because most everyone, has some type of debit card or credit card..

Great suggestion, Michele. Propay and I have been friends for a while. LOL....
Also, people tend to purchase more when they are able to use a debit or credit card. :)

Another option is to accept checks but indicate to the customer that you do not deliver until the check clears and it must be a local bank. Many online stores and catalogs use that as their policy.

You can just google propay, and it will come up, and it lists all the info about the program.. I know Jenn, Jhanna and I use it, and it is simple and very affordable.. It is nice to have.. especially when someone says to you, oh I forgot my checkbook... I just say, well your in Luck, I take credit cards...hehehe.. CHING CHING.. :) This is also excellent to have at fairs and craftshows also !! Then it will eliminate you taking checks from strangers...:)

I have accepted checks from people I don't know, but I've represented myself just like a store and I require 2 forms of ID AND I require their driver's license # and a phone # on their check.
I also have had ProPay since about 2002, love them!

no, propay is not through MB at all...you can go to www.propay.com
also...I use the online system. You can get a swiper or use a call in verification method...but i use the online system to cut cost.
Hope this helps

That's cool. I'd never heard of it. I'll check it out. I have a PayPal but don't really like taking payments through them.

it is very nice...you can also send a secure invoice to a customer that wants to purchase from you...or if you have someone out of town that wants to use a cc and have mailed to them out of your stock.

I do online also, but I mostly use the little swipper.. it is small and compact, I use it at craftshows, fairs etc, and also I always carry it in my smell & sell tote... Never know who you might run into, and I dont want to miss a sell, cause they only have a credit card with them..:)

I looked up the Propay yesterday and I think that is a really cool idea!
For all of the Propay users, do you have any customers that have doubted that method? Do you post a sign nearby explaining that type method and the protection that company offers (something like "Don't have cash? No problem, I use Propay! Propay is a yadda yadda yadda. . . .)

Basically you just tell them that you take Visa Or MasterCard.. You do not have to go into detail with it. It is just a service for credit cards.. Simple.. We take Visa Or Mastercard..:)
