whats a good size of a website when ur making a template??

I always make my templates 750px wide. I've chose this size by testing 750px centered on a ton of screens with different sizes but that is just me.

750px wide. Definately never anything over 800px wide.

I remember when you had to design templates to accommodate 640x480 screens. How painful was that?

Using a percentage of the screen and not pixels will render your site perfectly on every monitor no matter what the size. Such as in a table you would use.. width="75%" This way it doesn't matter what size monitor anyone has. :)
