How do you make candles?
Are they cheap/expensive to make? My wife loves them, it'd be an easier way to handmake a "suprise" for her every so often.
Also, is there really a big market for them?

Hi Jeremy,
There is a huge market for candles, and they are fun to make! They are definitely cheaper to make yourself.

I don't know if it would necessarily be cheaper to make them yourself if you just plan to make a few every so often as a gift. It is a time consuming process from what I understand, and to purchase all the supplies can get costly - depending how you want to do it and what types of candles you want to make.
It would definitely make a great gift though!

If you find a good one-pour wax it is very easy to do. I have gradually bought a few supplies for when I feel like making candles so everything is already onhand.
Another route you can take is going to someplace like fireflylites.com where you can buy kits with everything you need to make them. http://www.fireflylites.com/candlekits.html
There are also kits from CandleWealth where you get all of the ingredients in a little tub that is actually used in the microwave to melt the wax. I joined as a free member there to check them out but have never done anything.
So those are some ideas for you...mind you I haven't personally bought the kits yet because I still have supplies that I haven't used up. When I use them I'm going to try both of the above.
Good luck, and what a lucky wife you have!!!Edited by: missyroth

Hi! I make my own soy candles just for my own personal use and have made paraffin ones for Christmas gifts and things like that, so it is pretty much a hobby, but I just love it!!
If you want to just make gifts from time to time, I would recommend you get a kit and make a few candles that way. You can get all the supplies you need to make your own and not have a ton of leftover wax and fragrance oil and wicks that you don't really need.
It's not hard. You basically melt the wax ina double boiler and add the color and add the fragrance oil and then pour it. Soy wax you can even melt in the microwave.
If you want to make candles to sell though there's a lot of testing and experimenting to get things "just right," so that's a little different.
